We had the good fortune of connecting with R.C. Samo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi R.C., can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am a first generation American originally from San Francisco, CA. My father was an Assyrian from Iran and my mother is Lebanese, from Beirut. Being of two distinct ethnicities from the Middle East along with not fully belonging to those identities, let alone the American one, shaped my worldview quite differently.

Realizing in my late-20s that I had three identities to choose from and not being fully accepted by any of them allowed me to forge my own way without the pressures of conforming to any particular customs. I stand on the shoulders of my paternal ancestors, who created the written language, astronomy, as well as engineering marvels like the Ziggurat and my maternal ancestors, the seafaring adventurers of the Phoenicians who voyaged beyond any limitations.

The notion was (and is), “If my ancestors created the foundation of civilization and my parents were willing to move halfway around the world, learn a new language in order to create a better life for themselves, how could I not honor those efforts?”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have over 26 years experience as a journalist. I always thought writing was where I needed to be, but I also have a large voice that carries and for years, never truly expressing it, which I regret doubting my abilities for so long.

Once establishing myself as an entertainment journalist, my friend and prominent voice actress, Katie Leigh, started to nudge me as to why I was not in the industry. I did not think that a childhood dream would be a reality, but if my friend, who voiced most of my childhood, was giving me that push, who was I to disagree?

I fit in more as an Announcer rather than a Cartoon Character and that is just perfect. Throw me in front of a mic and I am happy to be an In-Game Host, Emcee or PA Announcer at a sporting event. Who knows, maybe the Padres will need someone for the 2022 season or beyond? I’m available.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely Comic-Con. It is fanboy/fangirl Heaven. It spills out all over the Gaslight District into PetCo. Park and even the USS Midway. How could you not want to spend time at the beach, running into your favorite celebrities, hanging out at a Naval Museum and a Ball Park all in one weekend?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Every immigrant that came from nothing in order to create a better life for their future generations are the real inspiration; from my parents to anyone that made it over are the foundation of the American Dream.
