We had the good fortune of connecting with PJ Sweeney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi PJ, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that taking risks is part of the business! You gotta play venues that are quality and not be afraid to walk in, meet the booking agent, shake their hand and tell them why they need you to play. I, myself, moved acrothe country to elevate my music career. You cannot be afraid and you cannot count yourself out. Take the risk, shake hands, book the show and show them who you are.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a session musican and live artist, it’s not easy finding work. Taking every audition and taking the risk of choosing the best band / band is paramount. Get the quality gigs and the money will come. Reaching out to people, networking and going to shows helps to get session work. It doesn’t just come to you. One must go and get it. There’s always challenges along the way, difficult musicians, people saying you can’t do it. You gotta have the strength and vision to know you’re a professional and can produce a fine end product. I just want people to know “pj plays the drums” as a way to show nothing can hold you back and you CAN do anything with hard work and diligence
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would travel around SD. Go to PB, shop around, check the venues. OB to wonderland for the food and view and the overall vibe of OB. Downtown for the music, life and history. And all the local Breweries, wineries and the many hikes and parks SD has to offer
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family. My friends. My fiance. My Friends and band mate’s from every band.
