We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Hathaway and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paula, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I knew at a very young age that I would never be happy working a normal 9-5 job and I really wanted to do something with my artistic abilities. Being able to create is so freeing.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most proud of how far I’ve come in my career. There weren’t a lot of women tattooing when I began my apprentice in 2002 and I wasn’t exactly sure of what my tattooing “style” was but I loved traditional tattoos and how timeless they were. For many years I just did what clients wanted without putting my own spin on it but was always thrilled when someone would say they saw a tattoo and knew that I had done it. I had slowly come into my style without even knowing it and it felt good.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them to Hotel Del in Coronado. Such a cool historical place. Walk the beach there. La Jolla cove and Sunset cliffs too. For food and drinks I would take em to Kindred in South Park, Waverly in Cardiff and Born and Raised in Little Italy. And for sure show them my fav local beaches like Beacons.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The story of my love for art and creating it would have to be dedicated to my father. He not only supported my journey into the tattoo world, he also helped me to purchase all my gear and supplies. My dad is an incredible artist himself. He was thrilled to see me do something with my talent.
