We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Cardillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patrick, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
There is a long rooted history between US Navy sailors and the styles and cultures of the south pacific island life. As an active duty veteran, I saw an intrest for Hawaiian styled button down shirts (or Camp shirts) that would also represent certain communities and jobs within the Navy. It is a well practiced tradition to have a Hawaiian shirt ready for Friday afternoons to welcome in the weekend and what better city to start this company in than the warm and sunny San Diego. Our shirts all incorporate insignias and artwork of communities within the Navy to make our designs that much more personal to our audience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are definetly not the only ones making Hawiian shirts, but we feel that ours are absolutley the most authentic. We work hard to make sure our designs aren’t just a tiled pattern with insignias slapped on to the shirt to make a quick buck. The attention to detail down to the choices of florals we use and what they represent or are used for is what sets our designs apart. There are other online “Custom ordered” Hawaiian shirts that you can tell are just batch designs. We also are very particular with our cut sheets and fabric patterns to create a higher quality fit. Every time we roll out a new line we always improve our overall design and eventually our 5 year goal is secure 100% made in America garments.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Its hard to choose a specific beach between all of our options, but our family does enjoy La Jolla shores the best. Getting there nice and early to secure a spot by a fire pit and even catch a few waves before it gets to crowded. With the right umbrellas it makes a full day at the beach very comfortable while you wait for sun to set and light up the fire pit for a few beers with friends. Other week activities we enjoy is the San Diego Zoo and balboa park. its a great location to start a day where you can find tons of dinner options and right down the street is north park that has a great bar scene and plenty of local breweries…Coinop is usually our first stop. The best thing about San Diego in my opinion is that its impossible not to find amazing food, of any kind.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Although the task of designing and manufacturing shirts can seem overwhelming at times, It actually quite the easier task when compared to the backend managing of the company. My wife, and STRNGBK’s Media Director Norra, built our website from the ground up, maintains it, and is constantly making changes to improve our online presence. Our success is directly attributed to her hard work.
