We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivia Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Olivia, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I’m a great believer of, if it makes you happy, keep going! Even though at times things will get though and your creative process gets stuck, eventually things will come around, it will always works out.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I Believe in working close with my clients, giving them a piece of jewelry that they have visualized in remembrance of a loved one, or a piece that holds kids initials or names. Most of my clients love ordering keepsakes and it is very important and very sentimental when I work on them. I feel super excited when people actually tell me, “ oh I bought these earrings from you at Casa Xovi” (a store in Barrio Logan that carry’s my jewelry). It’s kinda cool because mostly I’ve never met my clients, it’s all through orders online. So seriously it’s been a roller coaster but I love it, because your always learning from your ups and downs, now more so with this pandemic that has hurts us all in a way, as a business owner we have to learn to innovate. I have taken a little time off but not to the point of giving up my dream. I started in Tijuana and moved my way up to San Diego attending a few markets throughout the years the first time was Ray at Night in North Park Market, then I did a few others in Mission Valley/Horton Plaza, East Village, Barrio Logan Flea Market. Then a few years ago I met Xóchitl Villareal which owns Casa Xovi in Barrio Logan we both became in love with our drive of self made entrepreneur mom empowerment, she was more than happy to take in her shop a selected design pieces of mine which to date we still have in her shop. I think what I would love people to know is to never give up on your dreams. Even if you think the time is not right. The thing is that the time will never be right the important part is that you start.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A few of my favorite spots in San Diego would be first breakfast at The Mission in North Park then after breakfast a walk to Pigment for some plant shopping than a block away walk to Artelexia for some Mexican Gift shopping. After some shopping I love going on a beach walk either Pacific Beach or Mission Beach. I also love taking friends and family to La Jolla it’s really beautiful and dreamy to watch the sunset. For dinner at one of my favorite spots maybe a little romantic but worth it Arrivederci on fourth and university, love going their. On the following day I would take a stroll through Balboa Park and getting drinks at Old town or going to UTC for drinks at Raise By Wolves. So many places and things to do in San Diego if your not at a baseball game pregaming at ballast point brewery or walking through little Italy having some pizza at Filippi’s Pizza Grotto or walking through the boardwalk and watching sunsets. San Diego is a dream! If you need some adrenaline you can GoKarting at K1Speed and stopping by for some beer at Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan and shopping at Casa Xovi and other shops in the area having some coffee if your not up for the beer at Por Vida Cafe or having the Spicy Lemonade or Watermelon, they are to die for. Maybe getting some food from all that shopping at El Carrito for some Mexican food, it’s delicious or if your up for some hotdogs stop by at Barrio Dog. Seriously in San Diego you will not go bored! There’s secret areas were you can relax one of my favorites is Kate O Sessions Memorial Park it’s perfect for picnic vibe. San Diego is always a good idea!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to the Believers, to all who have supported me in the most minimum effort and to those who have always been there to cheer me up! To my clients for always coming back, for believing in my artistry. To myself for never giving up!
