We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being relatable and down to earth has been the most important factor behind blushtan’s success. Simply put, we strive to create a client experience that we would want for ourselves! It’s no secret that many clients are first time tanners and are very nervous. We’re here to make the spray tanning process enjoyable, welcoming and even educational. You won’t see runway models in blinged out bikinis in our ads, you’ll see our real clients–moms, brides, family vacations, proms, graduations and all the other little life moments we’re fortunate to be a part of.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Please tell us more about your business. -BlushTan has two locations in San Diego–downtown La Jolla and Encinitas. We are a clean beauty brand and use our proprietary spray tan solution that doubles as a skin care firming treatment! Using a variety of undertones we can mix up over 100 shades to fit each client’s unique skin tone and desired outcome. We have said goodbye to the days of sleeping in a spray tan, and are proud to offer our clients a variety of rinse time options to fit their busy schedules allowing them to rinse in just 2-4 hours post service.

We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others.
-We are down to earth babes who love a great spray tan. Our studios offer a spa-like atmosphere with lots of natural light which is unique from most tanning salons with sexy posters and neon signs. We’ve made a commitment to providing only sunless services (no uv tanning beds in sight!) and to offering healthy products even safe for pregnant women. We are anything but one-size-fits all. Our clients appreciate customization and we deliver that with each appointment. Many other salons offer spray tanning as an ancillary service (alongside facials, waxing, massage, etc.), but spray tanning is all we do! I like to think of it as you can get a pastry from a restaurant that happens to serve dessert, or you can get a pastry from a bakery. Most likely the bakery’s pastry would be a higher quality because it’s what they do best. We have been fortunate to hone all of our energy, research and effort on perfecting just one service and delivering outstanding quality.

What you are most proud of or excited about.
-I’m excited to see San Diego making better choices when it comes to tanning. Being in a warm climate it’s easy to get a tan outside, but the wrong choice in the long run. Your skin, and your dermatologist, will thank you for switching to a healthier option like spray tanning.

Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges
-No, and it still isn’t! Asking for help from your team is key. One person can’t do it all.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
-I’ve learned that there is always something to be learned. Just because something worked a few years or months ago, doesn’t mean that it’s still the best way to do it. Keep experimenting and take feedback as a gift until you see what’s the best fit for your business and your clients.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
-We would love to meet you! My career has allowed me to meet so many people with each 20 minute spray tanning appointment and if you’ve never had a spray tan consider it! It’s the fastest full body transformation you can get.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
