We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalia Merienne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalia, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
I have learned is that in order to have some success in this business you must have perseverance and discipline. But really the produce business is a people business were building strong relationships with your customers, growers and team are especially important.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Being a woman-owned business in the produce industry in itself, is a rarity and especially being an importer, we are a small and young company especially when compared to our competitors, so we use this to our advantage, we solve issues and give any support needed to our customers quickly and efficiently “we are Big enough to get the job done, but small enough to care about our customers business as it was our own”.

My story is that of David vs Goliath, competing against the large corporations that have been around for sometimes over a hundred years in a male dominated industry, my business was born out of passion, my first business venture when I was ten years old “selling natural drinks on hot days” I have always been an entrepreneur at heart, and I am following my heart with this venture.

I have a passion to learn and prepare myself and when I have communication with my growers, I probably ask more questions than they are used too, I think this is the woman side of me. As for competitive edge, we are very responsive to our customer needs, every customer is important, every sale is important but for us the most important thing of all , is that we did a good job for our customer and they are satisfied!!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A dinner in Mister A’s San Diego Zoo, which is one of the best Zoos in the country
A walk in Coronado bay
A day in Balboa Park

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My grandmother was my inspiration, when I was a kid, she would always cook this amazingly delicious and healthy food for the family. As part of our Mexican traditions, it is quite common to include Avocados in our daily diets on everything… from salads, soups, and yes of course our famous guacamole. I believe in that “you are what you eat”, and this is another reason why I got into the produce business, marketing avocados a “Superfood” makes me fill good about being in this business.
