We had the good fortune of connecting with Mya Romo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I was growing up I watched my parents working at the mercy of someone else. Clocking in and clocking out every day, unfortunately not being appreciated, being capped at the amount of money they can make, and missing out on family fun. All of which I did not want in my future. I wanted to create my own schedule, work at the times I wanted and never miss out on anything. I didn’t want to be under appreciated or under valued. Working for yourself and owning your own business is very hard work don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of long nights and early mornings but the only person I answer to is myself. If I have family trips, emergencies, etc. Nothing is holding me back from being where I want or need to be. I don’t have kids yet but one day owning my own business will allow me to raise my kids, not a daycare or other family members. That’s not to knock the parents that need childcare, it is just not what I want for my children. I wanted to build financial freedom all while being very involved with my family.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Precious Frames Photography. We specialize in documentary style photography, we strive to create timeless and emotional images that hold the most precious memories that you and your family will cherish forever!
I live in a small town and growing a business here has definitely not been easy and I still have a lot more growing to do but despite the challenges that come with a small town for example, over saturated photography community or a small audience. I pushed through the tough times and have gotten where I am now by going to conferences for example, WPPI or Portrait Masters, this allowed me to further my education in photography and make connections with other photographers to build my own little community. I also turned to social media and have traveled to other surrounding cities and even states to widen my target audience.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely either take them along with me on a shoot or set up a shoot with them. We would eat at Dirty Dough, a pizza restaurant in my city. Get drinks from La Tea Da, a lemonade store in my city, maybe make a trip to Flagstaff, Az which is about two hours away. I love flagstaff’s weather and vibe! Lastly I would definitely take them our closest mountains, the Hualapai Mountains. It is so beautiful up there, so many trees, trails, and animals!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly I have the best support system. I have two amazing parents, Leonard and Dulce Romo, who now have their own growing business, they taught me and guided me through everything, and they still do. If I have a question they usually have the answer and if they don’t you bet they will do the research with me to learn as well. They have spent countless hours helping me grow in the most efficient way possible. Aside from my parents I also have amazing mentors who have taught me everything I know now about photography. Jason and Joanne Marino literally gave me all my inspiration and knowledge of photography, and they continue to teach me. They both show so much support whether that’s Joanne giving me financial and customer service advice or Jason showing me some cool new tech shortcuts because we both love saving time! Then I have an amazing boyfriend who literally knew NOTHING about photography but learned for me, to help me at all my shoots and help me grow my business. He is literally my right hand man, for example, when I been editing for too long and I somehow can’t figure out what looks good or bad anymore he’s my second pair of eyes. He has truly been the best second shooter and supporter girl could ask for.
Now I love all these people so dearly but if I really had to say who deserves credit it would be my grandmother, my best friend. My grand parents both migrated to the United States from Mexico when my mother was a small child. They took a risk for me, their future. They wanted better for their kids and grandkids. For that she deserves more than she ever had. She was my biggest fan, she was so proud of me, for all of the little and the big. She’s now in heaven but no matter how far or how close she is I strive to be better everyday for her. She gives me all the determination I need to achieve my goals. Being successful is the least I could do for her coming with nothing just to she could give me everything.
