We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The single most important factor in my success has to be consistency. It’s very easy for someone to do something great one time, but the true test is if you can continue to be great over a long period of time. I don’t want to be remembered as the guy who gave them a good haircut one time, and wasn’t able to do it again. Being consistent over and over, that’s the true skill set!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Harris’ Hair Lounge takes traditional barbering, and puts a modernized twist on it.
My business started back in 2018, with the Vision of providing a professional, clean, and relaxing environment for all to enjoy. We decided early on we didn’t want to be like the traditional barber shops around town, we wanted to provide a more one on one basis, exclusivity. Being known as an exclusive private mens grooming establishment was the ultimate goal.
Being an exclusive, private shop gives us the opportunity to operate on more of a one on one basis, which allows the customers to feel comfortable and free. No stress or anxiety of tons of people looking at them while they get a haircut. It’s also allows the customer the opportunity to book an appointment, for a time and date that works best for them. No more sitting in the barbershop for hours waiting for your turn. We respect and value your time, and we wanted to show that.
After working in a busy barber shop for 12 years, I finally decided it was time to venture out on my own. The most challenging part of starting my own business was the fear of failure. Once I took that leap of faith, and just went for it, my life changed. To any one out there thinking of starting their own company, but is afraid,my advice is just do it. Bet on yourself, and take the chance. You don’t want to live your life regretting your decision not to do it.
Being diverse is what sets us apart. We don’t specialize in any one specific style, We’re trained and practice ALL hair styles, young and old alike.
You can come here and get pampered, everything from hot towel straight razor shaves, to facials, grey hair coverage, and even a 24k gold collagen masks, as well as haircuts.
Now in the first 13 months, I opened up my business, dealt with the death of my father, and was shut down due to a global pandemic. In the midst of it all, I maintained my values and stuck with it, and by the grace of god, I made it thru. Now here we are, 3 years of business having over come all that, and to go on and win the Best Barbershop in the high desert. A contest held here locally, voted on by the people, is what I’m the most proud of.
We’ve got to where we are today, by the people who support us. The customers are the most important part of the business.. happy clients tell their friends and family about us, and that’s what we strive for. Word of mouth is how our reputation has grown, and how it’ll continue to grow. Take care of the people who take care of you.
We want the world to know that when you step foot in our shop, we will do everything possible to make it the best experience possible. Our motto is Quality over Quantity,
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First we would go to the local juice bar, and grab a fruit bowl for breakfast from awake juice bar, then I would bring them to my shop and give them our signature Royal Treatment service. After that, we can grab lunch at the local deli. Vitellis’s Deli, they make the best sandwiches in the desert. We could go up to big bear and do some tubing or snowboarding. We can grab some great Italian food for dinner on our way down the mountain, at Mama Carpinos, best Selection of high end bourbon in town.
We can go down and check out the beach, maybe do some kayaking in La Jolla.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife and kids have to be recognized. My wife is the backbone of our family, she allows me the freedom to work and focus on the business, while she takes care of the house and kids. Without her support, none of this would be possible.
I would also like to thank each and every person who has ever come in and supported our business. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the loyalty and support.
