We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Martain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Besides the fact that working for myself was a priority, I think perseverance has been a key in this story, and love for what I do. I am proud and happy to work around people that share the same passion…
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started this business 16 years ago, bringing wines from Baja into the US, a backpack filled with 3 bottles of wine from 3 different wineries, and working my way in the trolley of San Diego… Now we work with more than 30 wineries, and have a catalog over 90 different labels- all from the Baja California region. Not easy, very challenging, but loving every step of the process. Enjoying people faces when they taste our wines, and were not expecting the greatness, when they hear our stories and fall in love with them, when they become our ambassadors in other parts of the world. Learning the lesson that perseverance will open doors at some point, the first years were not easy, but I kept going and believing and now it’s paying off…
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I would say take a trip to Valle de Guadalupe! Now we are being treated as locals, just one hour and a half from San Diego! Everything is so magical: wines, freshness of food, vineyards, architecture, amazing blend of cultures, but most of all, you are being treated as family!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Family! Family is a key factor to my success, not only because of them I am standing here right now, but because of what it inspires… in Mexico, most of the wineries I work with are family owned- not only can I speak because I grew up there, but because all the brands that I represent, I know these people by heart and their families too! Without the support, the mentorship, love and fights, the whole package- good and bad, is a very important part of this story.
