We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Cole and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is to never stop learning. As I’ve worked in the beauty industry throughout the decade, I’ve seen trends, products and technology change constantly. It is so easy for an artist to become stagnant in their work and limited in the services they can offer. I find that being willing and open to learning is key to staying inspired, ahead of the curve and can really grow clientele. Weather it be trade-shows, online workshops etc, every little bit can be a asset to ultimately drive business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a San Diego based nail tech that specializes hand painted nail art and natural nail designs. I started in this industry with a love and fascination in nail art. I was first introduced to while working as a make up artist backstage in New York City over a decade ago. Although my specialty at the time was in special effects and studio make up, I was always so intrigued by the nail industry, specifically nail art. Whilst I dabbled as a passion hobby throughout those years, it wasn’t until 2018 when I (finally) decided to jump into the industry professionally by pursuing my license. Since then, Ive been blessed to really explore this avenue with success, amazing clients and get to grow as an artist. Currently I am working on my luxury press on nails brand and with clients in salon.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
With so many great neighborhoods, eateries and local businesses to support, San Diego is without a doubt a city like no other. I absolutely love showing off what this city has to offer, first stop always being breakfast. Swammies in North Park, Morning Glory in Little Italy and Darkhorse Coffee in Golden Hill are among my favorite go to spots for delicious food and great urban exploration. A day spent hiking Torrey Pines or taking in the wildlife in La Jolla Coves is always a great way to show off the natural beauty of this city. Afterwhich a stop at Gerard Gourmet for their amazing smoked salmon quiche and adorable sugar cookies is a must. My all time favorite spots to showcase are those that are not always easily found. Hidden gems like Vin de Sirah downtown, Caché in Hillcrest and False Idol in Little Italy lend to a unique speakeasy experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My support group has always been instrumental to my success. When entering any new venture, it is so important to surround yourself with people who really encourage and cheer you on. It can be nerve-racking, scary and unknown. The support from friends and family I have received has been amazing and for that I am so appreciative.
