We had the good fortune of connecting with Meghan Patke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meghan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was because I was not seeing representation and diversity around me and wanted to build an agency and community that felt more like myself, and how I was raised – inclusive, engaging, forward-thinking, and truly client-service oriented.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Meghan Patke, Founder & CEO of the HSMAI 2021 Adrian Award-winning  bespoke West Coast-based modern communications house—Modern Currency PR, ventured to the U.S. over two decades ago as an immigrant from Singapore on a student visa to study at the University of Southern California in the wake of 9/11. As a young BIPOC woman who fought hard for every opportunity with unmatched drive and determination, Patke’s tenacity landed her a job at a venerable leading hospitality PR agency at the tender age of 22, where she rose the ranks from Account Coordinator to Vice President, before spreading her wings and launching her own thriving hospitality PR company in 2017 at the age of 33.
With nearly 20 years of earned PR experience under her belt, Patke’s enduring tenure in the fast-paced world of Public Relations runs the gamut from orchestrating Hello Kitty’s 35th birthday; advocating tirelessly for sustainability and piloting the successful launch of the West Coast and South Pacific’s first-ever Dock to Dish programs; leading the charge on some of the country’s most renowned hotel brands and resorts including Four Seasons Resort Maui, Arizona’s award-winning Castle Hot Springs, multiple South Pacific luxury hotels including Kokomo Island Fiji and Vomo Island Fiji; launching Netflix’s award-winning docu-series High on The Hog in one of the country’s most tumultuous years for social justice reform; and is responsible for several award-winning leading hospitality PR campaigns for luminary culinary figures including Michael Cimarusti, Massimo Bottura, David Myers, Adam Perry Lang, Niki Nakayama, and Jet Tila.

Since launching her own boutique hospitality & travel agency over half a decade ago, Patke and her dynamic team of senior PR professionals continue to lead the charge for the industry standard with fast-witted—and paced—hospitality PR campaigns amidst the pandemic era, while remaining wholly dedicated to weathering the pandemic storm, tapping into the company’s reverberant ethos––‘Relevancy is Your Modern Currency’––remaining attuned & service-oriented whilst upholding meaningful media relations tactics with the utmost sensitivity.

Dedicated to establishing and maintaining long-term client and media relationships, under Patke’s leadership, Modern Currency combines the familiarity of an in-house PR team (focused on specialized senior-level service) with the professionalism of a large agency, working side-by-side with clients to strategize and execute with unparalleled focus and consistent results.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many fun and exciting experiences to be found in L.A. — some of my favorites include making the most of the incredible SoCal weather with rooftop drinks at Grandmaster Recorders or E.P. & L.P., or a visit to The Magic Castle if you want to get more dressed up and have a magical evening, or perhaps to visit some classic L.A./Hollywood staples like Dan Tana’s or Musso & Frank’s for a martini or two. To clear the mind and stretch the legs, I also love doing the 3-mile circuit around the Lake Hollywood reservoir, and recharging my soul with a visit to Spellbound Sky, that has some of the best crystals and spiritual goodies in town.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout list is long. There are so many people to thank along the way who have paved the way forward for me including my parents, close friends, numerous longstanding clients, incredible mentors and media allies, and of course my current team, including our agency’s incredible senior leaders including Jordan Robinson and Carrie Rollings, who are some of the smartest, brightest, and also kindest colleagues to work with day in and day out during this pandemic era.

Last but not least, is it also weird to call out the naysayers? For everyone who said I couldn’t or closed a door, just further fueled my fire to create something that would make me proud, and would be an environment that was an enriching and rewarding one.
