We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My main thought process behind starting my own business was about being able to make choices. I had worked for a lot of companies that I felt I didn’t have many opportunities to make choices and decisions. With my own business I liked the idea of having influence on how processes and decisions are made. With my business in particular, I can always be changing my style, editing and learning new techniques. There is a lot of creative freedom when I am allowed to decide on what works and what needs to be changed.

What should our readers know about your business?
Owning a real estate photography company is full of creative moments and also challenging ones. I am always the most proud when my photos of homes are published in magazines like Dream homes, New York Times and LA Times. When I first started I never thought my photos would be seen by so many people, it’s really amazing when I think about it! Starting my business was full of many challenges and decisions on how to make my process seamless and helpful to realtors. What sets me apart from other companies is my photos are all same day and returned by midnight day of shoot. Even more important is my business is run just by me. I shoot and edit all of my photos and add my person creativity to provide photos that are beautiful and unique. There is a lot better consistency in photos when the same person is there to shoot and edit. One of the most important lessons I have learned along the way has been to keep going even when it’s difficult. There are a lot of responsibilities and moving parts to owning a business. Even when feeling disappointed on some days where I didn’t feel I reached my full potential, I know that it’s an opportunity to learn something new and to not let it hold me back. There is no growth in being 100% perfect all the time, some of my greatest accomplishments came from making mistakes and learning from them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of the best places are right here in San Diego! We have amazing sunsets at the beach and awesome food! If in San Diego I would definitely visit Coronado island and see the Hotel Del, it’s so beautiful. As a San Diego native I would definitely go to Board and brew for a quick Sandwich and dinner at World Famous in Pacific Beach or Market in Del Mar. Little Italy downtown also has wonderful food and great sights of downtown. There is lots of fun shopping and places to stop for photos as well. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Big shoutout to my parents for teaching me how to be consistent, and to always do my best! That working hard is where I learn the most and not just in the final result. My husband Jonathan for taking good care of me when I need extra support!
