We had the good fortune of connecting with Aida M Valencia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aida M, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Opening a Gallery was a big challenge specially because of the venue and the time it was opening when all the market was crashing ,I looked at it as and opportunity ,I was a 5 year struggle and finally we had to close, but we created a very good reputation and we launched another project called the Latin American Art Fair again with the purpose of promoting the art form the Latin American Community .it was a successful event again for a 5 year period . This year we are rethinking our way of promoting the arts to create a new platform and to be ready f=for what will be our next project.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I consider myself a Visual Artist, my artistic impression is through Mosaic and mixed media materials like copper, aluminium, wood and natural stone… Contemporary mosaic work is a creative process that I like to work in series, trying to say as much as possible with them, this is what sets me apart from decorative mosaic work. The most important aspect I need to overcome, my big challenge, is to distance myself from the decorative part and create art works that can have a voice by themselves. Drawing, creating a narrative and allowing myself to realize these ideas and thoughts, this has been the challenge and tO achieve this expression of art through Mosaic I want to create a conversation between the artist and the public. Tell stories about our world, about life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Im a Binational artist and consider that is great to see both worlds San Diego and Tijuana. The best places to go Coronado the beach ,the town the community and food are great ,,Balboa Park waking around this area is magical even in this pandemic time Museums an more!! and crossing the border first to the Lobster and then to the Wine Country and with this 4 things are sufficient for the week!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
its all about unity an effort, I have lots of people I like to recognize as mentors friends and advisors. Since I started i have been mentored by Master Mosaics’ Giulio Mennossi, he has thought the art to create and dream always being truthful to my way of seeing life. In the real world here, i have a lot of people to be grateful of all i have received ,,like Alessandra Moctezuma that help me create Casa Valencia Gallery and opened another chapter of my life and for does who believed in this project Ashley Gardner and Linda Caballero for their relentless help at Liberty Station.. My partners in Crime Gabriela Avila ,Brenda Parra Aracely Lewis ,,Danya Ramos and the whole great team that together formed a group that help us realized the Latin American Art fair in San Diego. A very ambitious dream where we received the help of Ann Berchtold who guide us in this adventure This is way I started with “its all about Unity!” Lots of support and great friendship this is the best of all
