We had the good fortune of connecting with McKenna Scheppele and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi McKenna, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of my business is making sure that my clients always come first. From start to finish, I want them to experience excellent customer service, a personalized experience when it comes to meeting their expectations, as well as designing their space, and that they are consistently seeing quality in why they hired me to design their space. Without my amazing clients, I would not have a business at all.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was lucky enough to know that I wanted to be an interior designer from a very young age. I was the kid moving around furniture in the middle of the night so I would wake up to a newly designed bedroom. Knowing what I wanted to be and actually becoming that are very different. I started out working as a home stager and it quickly evolved into my design firm. I worked lots and lots of hours learning how to start a business of design and what tools I would need to be successful. I’m very proud of how far I’ve come and I’m very excited that I’ve been in business for myself for 5 years. There are always lessons to be learned. I’ve made mistakes, some big, some small, some expensive, but I know that by making mistakes I learn and always do better for my future clients and my business overall. I want people to know that by hiring me to design their home, office or any other space, that it’s more than just a job to me. They are bringing me into an intimate part of their life and they can put their trust in me to design something they’ve always envisioned for themselves.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I could take anyone anywhere in San Deigo, it would no doubt be the coast. We have amazing beaches here in San Diego and I want people to experience them! Each beach town has a very different atmosphere, but there is always something to do and see or a yummy restaurant to try. One of my very favorite coffee shops is Pannikin in Oceanside. Their coffee is fresh and the backdrop is relaxing and so enjoyable. If I were to choose a restaurant, it would be Best Pizza in Cardiff by the Sea. The pizza has dough like no other and they have a really great variety of pizzas to choose from. It’s a very relaxed, fun environment and they always have the best music playing. I am do lucky to live in San Diego and experience all that nature has to offer here and I don’t ever take it for granted!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have my parents to thank for my success and showing me that it takes hard work, grit and dedication to be successful. My mom worked in a hospital, so I learned the value of working with others and what it means to show up on time and not let others down. I work with many vendors and contractors and I know that communication and commitment are core values that I must have in my work environment. My dad is an entrepreneur. He is the definition of a hard worker and he has always shown me what it takes to work for yourself. It’s not a walk in the park. It’s long days, late nights and a lot of behind the scene organization that most people don’t see. You have to be creative and innovative and I owe a lot of my success to him showing me a great example.
