We had the good fortune of connecting with Marlenee Calderon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marlenee, what inspires you?
My main inspiration is my culture. I am first generation chicana, my parents are from Mexico. They came to the US back in the 70’s. I embrace both the chicana side and the Mexican side of who I am. Most of the facepaint and drawings I create are of calaveras and payasas.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My culture comes alive through my art, as well as feelings and emotions that reside within me. I have a vision and a mission to leave my mark in the art world, CALDERON:. (my last name) will be remembered. Im excited to see how far this thing called art will go, Ive been an artist my whole life. From starting off with pencil to paper when I was a child, to putting my art on my face now as an adult through facepaint. Im proud to see how far I have come with my skill, I am my biggest and hardest critic but also my greatest fan. I always look to my previous piece, whether its a drawing or my last facepaint; to see how I can improve or challenge my self further. I have learned through out this journey to not pay mind to what the world will say about your art. Create for the love of the craft. Your art is a representation of who you are, what you feel, and because of this no one can tell you that your art is right or wrong.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego county is beautiful, but I would plan a trip to Baja. Take them out to Ensenada, go camping and enjoy some amazing food. There’s a camp site called Las Cañadas in Ensenada that I love. You can camp outside or in a cabin. There’s a water park inside and variouse pools. They have a convenient store on site, everything you could need is there. A week long of being outside in nature, enjoying the simple life and heading out to eat some amazing seafood. I am a huge seafood lover; ceviche, aguachiles, mojarras, cócteles is where my heart lives.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To the ones who believe in my art, see the passion and love that goes in to it. To my family that support me, especially my cousin Lucia Deniz (@ldeniz88 IG) She’s been my number one supporter since I started, going with me to events, making connections and pushing me to not give up. To the photographer’s that get my vision and tell a story with every picture taken. Some of my favorite photographer’s have to be Tere (@photorebel82 IG) and Carlos (puro_wino_streetwear IG) These two photographers vibe with my art and create an everlasting image that portray a beautiful story to be told. Definitely check them out on Instagram, they are amazing.
