Meet Marina Shkolnik | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marina Shkolnik and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marina, how does your business help the community?
My business creates value by helping brands and businesses communicate their identity in a strong, professional, and visually compelling way. High quality imagery plays a major role in how a company is perceived, and I help businesses elevate their brand presence through strategic photography and visual storytelling.
Beyond creating content, I help businesses build trust, strengthen customer engagement, and stand out in competitive markets. Whether it’s through editorial-style branding imagery, professional portraits, or marketing visuals, my work is designed to support growth and long-term brand recognition.
At the same time, photographing families and special events is incredibly meaningful to me on a personal level. I’m able to document important milestones, relationships, and memories that become part of people’s lives for years to come. Being trusted to capture those moments is something I never take lightly, and it’s one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
I also value collaboration with local businesses and entrepreneurs, and I see photography as a tool that not only supports individual companies, but also contributes to a stronger and more connected community overall.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the things that sets my work apart is that I approach photography with both a creative and strategic mindset. I’m drawn to imagery that feels elevated, intentional, and emotionally connected, whether I’m photographing a branding campaign, an advertising concept, a wedding, or a family. I love creating photographs that not only look beautiful, but also tell a story and make people feel something.
A large part of my work is rooted in visual storytelling and human connection. I’m especially proud of being able to adapt across different types of photography while still maintaining a consistent artistic perspective and attention to detail. I enjoy blending editorial aesthetics with authenticity so the final images feel polished, but still real and meaningful.
Professionally, my path has been very organic and built over time through experience, relationships, and consistently refining my craft. Like most creative careers, it definitely wasn’t always easy. Building a business requires persistence, adaptability, and a willingness to keep evolving creatively and professionally. There were challenges in learning how to balance the artistic side with the business side, overcoming self-doubt, and continuing forward during slower or uncertain periods.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of consistency, professionalism, and staying true to your creative voice. I’ve also learned that relationships and trust are everything in this industry. So much of my growth has come through collaboration, referrals, and genuinely connecting with people.
What I want people to know about my brand is that it’s built on intention, creativity, and care. Whether I’m working with a business, a brand, or documenting a personal milestone, I want the experience and the final work to feel thoughtful, elevated, and lasting.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d probably plan a week that mixes nature, great food, and some of my favorite local places. I love showing people the spots that feel inspiring, relaxing, and connected to my life here.
One of my favorite places is Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. I’d definitely take them there for the beach and a hike because the views are beautiful and it always feels peaceful and grounding. I’d also spend a day at Balboa Park because I love the architecture, gardens, museums, and creative energy there.
I’d also want to show them my hometown of Poway and some of my favorite local spots. We’d go to UVAS Winery and Barrel Riot for wine and good local food.
I’m very inspired by atmosphere, scenery, and meaningful experiences, so I naturally love places that feel memorable and have character. Southern California has such a good balance of nature, creativity, and laid-back energy, and that’s something I really appreciate both personally and creatively.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d dedicate my shoutout to the people who believed in me and supported my creative path early on, especially the mentors, clients, friends, and family members who encouraged me to keep building and evolving my work.
Photography is such a collaborative industry, and I’ve been fortunate to work alongside incredibly talented creatives, business owners, and couples who trusted me with important moments and creative projects. That trust has played a huge role in helping me grow both artistically and professionally.
I also think every entrepreneur is shaped by the community around them. The support, referrals, encouragement, and opportunities that come from genuine relationships make a real difference, and I’m very grateful for that.
