Meet Maricarmen Maffioli | Creative Director & Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maricarmen Maffioli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maricarmen, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued a creative career because I realized that my “work” was at its best when it was an extension of my own curiosity and my love for people. Growing up, I always had an internal drive to work for myself—not just for the independence, but because I wanted the freedom to build something anchored in genuine hospitality. For me, creativity isn’t just about the aesthetics of a photograph or the logistics of an event; it’s about the joy of designing and curating an experience that makes someone else feel truly seen. I chose this path because when you align your career with something you authentically enjoy, the line between “working” and “living” disappears. Being my own boss allows me to prioritize those human connections and ensure that every project I touch—from a high-end wedding to a brand expansion—is infused with that same intentional, people-first energy that makes this career feel less like a job and more like a calling.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is fundamentally about the human experience—it’s anchored in a deep, authentic care for the people I serve. Whether I’m behind the lens at a destination wedding or consulting for a growing brand, what sets me apart is that I’m not just providing a service; I’m curating a space where others feel truly seen and valued. Getting to where I am today professionally was never easy; as a BIPOC immigrant woman, I’ve had to work for every inch of progress, and building my businesses from scratch has been an uphill battle. I’ve overcome those challenges by realizing that success is a long game—you can’t give up when things get difficult. My passion for constant learning and my love for collaborating with other creatives have been catalysts for my growth, but the real secret is the resilience it takes to keep going. I want the world to know that it is possible to build a sustainable, soul-filling business on your own terms. If you lead with hospitality and don’t give up on your dreams, you can turn your unique perspective into your greatest strength.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I went to culinary school and have a deep passion for the island’s food scene, a perfect week on Oahu would be a curated mix of high-end flavors and hidden natural gems. We’d start with sunrise at Lanikai or a quiet afternoon at Bellows, followed by hikes through a jungle or the rugged coastline of Kaʻena Point. Because I love the local creative pulse, our evenings would be centered around the music scene, specifically grabbing cocktails at Lewers Lounge in the Halekulani for the best jazz on the island. We’d definitely hit spots like Senia to see modern Hawaiian cuisine pushed to its limits, balancing those world-class meals with simple days of camping and beach-hopping. It’s all about experiencing the “natural rhythm” of the island—good food, great music, and plenty of space to just breathe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to dedicate this shoutout to the mentors and communities that helped me turn my passion for people into a sustainable, professional reality. The insights from Never Eat Alone and Unreasonable Hospitality were foundational for me; they reinforced my belief that business is always personal and that the best way to grow is by leading with generosity and “unreasonable” care for every guest. Beyond those pages, a huge part of my development has come from my investment in multiple business masterminds. Being part of those groups taught me that while I value working for myself, I don’t have to do it by myself. Surrounding myself with other driven entrepreneurs provided the sounding board I needed to keep evolving and to ensure I’m always building a brand that puts musicians, artists, and clients first. This shoutout goes to the authors and the peers who remind me that we’re all better when we’re learning from one another.
