We had the good fortune of connecting with Breezy Nowlan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Breezy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I never thought I would want to start my own business, but I was so unbelievably passionate about the recovery world and what was happening with sober living homes that I felt like it was almost my duty. When I got sober, I went through a sober living home that was quite the opposite of what it presented itself to be and was very chaotic. Unfortunately, the sober living owner didn’t actually care about the women in his home and most of them ended up relapsing. Our house manager was also currently using and it was a very messy situation. After I left that facility and moved back to Southern California, I found a different sober living that was the complete opposite of the place I had just moved from. This house genuinely cared for us and most of the women that leave that house are still sober today. That is when I knew I had to create something that helped people find safe, secure housing for those wanting to get sober and that is how I started Taste Recovery.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started Taste Recovery in December of 2019, designing the website with my team and bringing that vision to life. I knew exactly why I was building this resource and that is what continued to drive me every single day. I saw that there was a problem and this was the solution to fix it. The problem is that for the first time ever, over 100,000 people died from a drug related overdose last year. That number is not slowing down, especially due to the pandemic. Addiction is rampant and there are people that like to take advantage of vulnerable people by opening up “recovery homes” that are body brokering these individuals to make as much money as possible. They are also committing insurance fraud and many other illegal acts. Until Taste Recovery, there was no resource to allow people to review these homes, therefore, they kept getting away with it and the end result is addicts dying because they ended up in the wrong place. Taste Recovery was designed to make it extremely easy for people to find sober living homes in their area, but the most important feature is that anyone that has ever lived in these homes can leave honest reviews to either shine light on the good homes or expose the bad ones! We want people to utilize this feature as much as possible because you could be saving someone else’s life!

We also are having our first ever event- Camp Sober Fest! This weekend is dedicated to showing those in early recovery that we can and do have way more fun sober than we ever did in our addiction! We will be playing Bingo, having a talent show, climbing a rock wall, facing our fears at the high ropes course and so much more! But most importantly, we will be having campfire meetings where we get to hear someone else’s experience, strength and hope!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting, that means they are more than likely sober! Therefore, I would take them to great meetings, sober weekend events, go on hikes and take yoga classes at RA!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My first shoutout is to Wings of Hope, the second sober living I moved into that showed me what a safe place looked like. This home is run by Kim O’Donnell and she pours her heart and soul into the women that live in her sober living and for that I am incredibly grateful! I also want to shoutout my dad for helping me follow my dreams and believes in Taste Recovery as much as I do. He has helped me grow this company from the ground up!
