We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariah Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mariah, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
One day while smoking a nicely rolled joint, I burned my fresh set of nails. I was devastated but after a second of reflecting, I discovered a solution that will help others avoid the same pain. Combining my passion for crystals & cannabis, I created Ganja Wands. Each Ganja Wand is beautifully handcrafted with unique crystals & beads to help amplify your aura while keeping your nails fly as you get high.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Not your average “roach clip” that’s for sure lol Handcrafting cannabis clips that are crystals wrapped in wire with detailed designs, definitely took a lot of trial and error to perfect my technique, and over time I’ve learned to produce quality smoke tools. Once you use a Ganja Wand, you’ll enjoy an elevated smoke experience. A total game-changer that you’ll want to use for every smoke sesh.
Not only can you avoid burning your fingers while smoking, but you can also use Ganja Wands as a tool to retrieve your credit card from atm machines, parking meters, and gas pumps. Which comes in handy especially if your nails are quite long.
I have had to overcome many challenges to get to where I am today. Before launching my business, I had to undergo thumb surgery on both my hands and due to me being a type 1 diabetic, I had a longer recovery time. After tons of therapy and regaining mobility, I had to learn how to utlize the hands God has blessed me with to help others. I feel like I have found a way to do that by shining my light and sharing my creations with the world. I want everyone to enjoy an elevated smoke experience while connecting with you’re spirtitual HIGHER self.
I currently attend pop-up events in LA that feature black owned businesses. This is where I connect with the communtity and showcase my products. I find it rewarding seeing everyones face light up as they become aware that their now is a tool to help solve their problem. Gone are the days of burning you fingers.
A lesson I learned along the way is that as long as I believe in myself and follow through with my vision, the possibilities are endless. I know that I have the potenital to become sucessful and have faith that I have the power to impact lives. One of my goals is to make changes to help include and represent women in the cannabis industry, especially women of color. I am an adovacte for the underdogs, the women who get overlooked by these male coorperations, and the underrepresented disabled minorites. Together we can conqure the game by shedding light to us ladies who might not have been given the same opportunites as our white male counterparts.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you are in LA for the weekend you should definitely enjoy a few of my favorite spots. I’m a foodie and can help point you in the right direction. My top 5 go-to spots for food include Toca Madera, Bossa Nova, Montey’s Burger, Chef Marilyn’s, Girl & the Goat. An honorable mention goes to Pizzanista! I also recommend visiting Lake Hollywood Park for a nice picnic with a view or grab your rollerskates and skate at the beach. If you are open to exploring the city, check out a cool themed bar based on Tim Burton’s films, called Beetle House LA. On Sunday, you could head to LA’s dopest pop-up event featuring over 100+ black-owned businesses called Black on the Block. This event is once a month and is currently located at Wisdome in the Arts District.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to say thank you to all the beautiful beings that have supported me throughout my journey. Everyone that has purchased or spread the word about my business, I truly appreciate you for believing in my vision and helping me get closer to my dreams. Seeing people enjoy my creations, confirms I am on the right path to reaching my goals and growing to one day become a successful Afro-Latina Entrepreneur.
