We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Martir and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was born and raised in Nayarit, Mexico, a country with plenty of culture and traditions. Although I have moved to other cities in the course of my life, my roots always came with me everywhere. Because of the passion and love for my roots, Maria Innata arose. Maria Innata wants to be the voice of the Artisans, the voice of remote communities, of the indigenous people, that are not spoken about often, but they are the reason for our origin. Maria Innata wants to contribute to the cultural preservation through craft, to show the wealth of colors, texture, visions. I am fortunate to live in an incredible place, even if it is far from my homeland, It has enabled me to reach new spots, new people. Maria Innata is a new brand but a brand with a lot of vision, dedication, and love.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Every person who has a small business knows that It is not as easy as it looks. A small business has highs and lows, motivation and demotivation, but we always have to recover the focus, the goal. This project makes me feel proud to be able to help Artisan families. I feel so proud to work with dedicated people. I always receive many kind words from the Artisans about how thankful they are for all the support I give them and the team that we make. It is a feeling that I have no words to explain. Maria Innata may help them to put some food on their tables, but I receive an invaluable gift: they have taught me the purest form of gratitude. I want that the talent, the culture, and the love that we have for my homeland is known everywhere.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love San Diego, it has many must-visit places. Here, you can find everything you desire. Beaches, mountains, beautiful views, amazing food, and great weather. Speaking about my business goal, I would recommend visiting Old Town because here you will find many Mexican businesses that they will make you feel like you are in Mexico. You can find food, souvenirs, music, etc. Also, I would recommend visiting the incredible murals in Barrio Logan, definitely, you surround yourself with a lot of history and colors. I am so grateful to live here.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of course, there are people who have been a key piece on this project. My family, because they instilled in me the admiration for my homeland. They instilled in me to be proud of the roots we come from. The Artisans who work with their hands to make authentic pieces of art. Those who work with a lot of passion and love for their culture. And definitely, my husband, who is always pushing me to reach my goals, to make the things that make my soul feel happy. Who motivates me to take risks and to help me to believe how capable I am.
