We had the good fortune of connecting with Manny Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Manny, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Starting a business is tough. Especially when I’m thinking of beginning my third company. You need to be fully committed, regardless of what people think of you. Use that to your advantage to accomplish your dream. The Mancave Barbershop and West Coast Trash Haul are 2 of the companies that i put 100% in order to insure they are successful. Time is something critical to me. Having a schedule and planned day is very important in my life to make things go smoothly. For some reason I believe if I’m sitting in the coach just watching a show is wasting time. When i’m on my phone i’m always reading articles on other entrepreneurs gathering ideas to menafast into my life. My family and kids have been a huge part of my motivation. Making sure they grow happy and healthy has alway been in the back of my head. Everything I do is mostly for them and in other words they are my little bosses. Also my wife has been the backbone of my success. She has always encouraged me to go for it, even though not everything i do is a success, she’s always there to give me that eye roll for that next project I think about. But that itself just encourages me to prove her wrong.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Everything I do I visualize to see how it looks in my mind first. I know many people do this, but I truly believe my mind and body work differently than others. As I got older I started to realize which natural skills I had to succeed in life, so I just went with it, rolled the dice and did everything I could to make my life get to where I am at now. I believe I’m a creative thinker. I had to become a people person and soak up a lot of information from a mass majority of people to learn from their point of views and then take what i needed and apply them for myself. My financial skills came from learning from financial planners, bankers and other entrepreneurs that I have came across. Reading books about finance and trying out those tactics in my life. I had my ups and down trying this on my own. But trying is what gets you where you want to be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego is a great place to be and live. I think everywhere you go is exciting and beautiful. From the ocean, restaurants and parks. I would take a first timer to Old town San Diego. The atmosphere is great. There are many restaurants to choose from and the families walking around makes it feel like your just free from everything. Then I would go to my favorite place which is Mission Beach. It has amusement rides, the ocean if you like to swim or just grab a beer. Then would probably finish the day heading to gas lamp to grab some dinner at one of their many restaurants downtown. I truly believe San Diego is number one in Cali.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have been a huge influence in the beginning of my success. My father and mother have been hard working people in our society and taught me to be as well. Coming from migrant parents and being raised here in the US, we have always had in our minds that you needed to become someone to be noticed. I remember when i was young my mother, all she wanted was to someday see me driving a big truck working at an office somewhere. That was her idea of success. So I do apologise to mom for going above and beyond. My parents always took me to random offices to conduct business. It wasn’t so they could watch me, but to use me as a translator. Lol my parents themselves have been business owners. They owned a restaurant back in Northern California. They always wanted me to follow in the family business but I had other plans.. In 2007 I joined The Marine Corp and I believe some of my tactics that i used in my life is to get S!@t done, yes the corp has definitely had something to do with it. The Marine corp experiences i had were amazing. Teaching me to become a leader and be more gung ho. Hoorah!
