Meet Makayla Wardrip | Co-Owner of Under The Sun

We had the good fortune of connecting with Makayla Wardrip and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Makayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In this day and age, it’s a lot more motivating to start your own business when it’s hard to find a job, especially one that’s reliable and rewarding. The job search especially after 2020, has been rough applying to hundreds of jobs, just to receive no luck. That’s when you start the thought process of wanting to start your own thing and find your purpose. That’s when Under The Sun began its beginning stages, to where it is today. We knew going into it, we definitely have other competitors but we felt confident in our work, and took advantage of our connections within the local music scene in San Diego, which has helped us tremendously.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets us apart from other businesses is our pure love and passion for music. No matter how much we grow, we always will give the smaller artists a chance to shine. We understand the struggles of the music industry with one of us being a local musician.
We are excited to see where Under The Sun takes us and how much it continues to grow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely be taking them to the classic areas like La Jolla, Balboa Park to the zoo, and Coronado. For a more unique experience, we’d show them areas like Ocean Beach and Carlsbad. For food, we would love to take them to Cocina 35 for their chilaquiles for breakfast, for lunch we’d go to Chiquibaby Bar for their street tacos, for dinner we’d switch it fancier & go to Rustic Root! After dinner for drinks, we’d either take them to Part Time Lovers or Lou Lou’s in Lafayette Hotel!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our biggest motivation to our growth with Under The Sun is the local community within the music scene! When we started this project, we received a lot of support from fellow musicians and local music venues. They have helped us grow to where we are currently and we are forever grateful for them all!
