We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorna Harkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lorna, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
My name is Lorna, I’m from London UK. My Grandmother heavily influenced who I am today, I’m not sure why so many of us are influenced by a grandparent, but mine was fabulous. She taught me to crochet aged 9, and although I grew up wanting to become a teacher, I drifted quite comfortably into Curtain Design and Dressmaking in the UK. I completed a City and Guilds course in Curtain Design, and was so taken with my new found skills that I decided to open a small shop in Surrey, England. With my expertise I was able to purchase a drapery business here in the USA, and moved to San Diego in 2015. Loving every minute of my exceptional position, going in and out of the most beautiful homes I’ve seen.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My City and Guilds course taught me how to properly hand sew, and I discovered a new found appreciation for creativity. Sometimes I see a garment or drapery and I get goosebumps about the talented fingers that were behind an amazing piece like that. I can’t believe how easily I slipped into who I am today,… I always think to myself “Who knew”! My course felt too easy, but I did witness people struggle and give up. The joy I get from people saying “Wow” never gets old. Right now I am really busy with a number of exciting projects, helping my clients ensure that their homes are as individual as they are.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I love my new digs, San Diego is still so exciting to me 5 years on. Some of my favorite places include, Encinitas Moonlight beach. Strolling along the promenade at Carlsbad, where the vibe here is fabulous, (Coyote is a scream)… Hillcrest for their cafe vibe. Pacific 333 in Oceanside for a great meal, also Vintana, those are my go to restaurants. And who can forget the hiking… it’s everywhere. My sister-in-law lives in the most amazing house in Mission Hills, a wonderful 1920’s Historical home with the best views.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Everyday I make something wonderful, I picture my Grandmother there, saying “well done girl, you’re so talented”. I love and miss her, and know she is proud that one of her grandchildren picked up her talents. But choosing a live and well human today has to be Lis Donaldson, since our very first meeting we hit it off immediately. She is a fountain of support to me both business and personal, she works incredibly hard and her talent and business acumen is contagious, I’m in awe of her!
