We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Hammond and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I didn’t start out thinking I’d start my own event coordinating business. I coordinated a neighbor’s wedding as a favor and realized how much I enjoy helping make someone’s wedding day their favorite day! A few years later, a friend of mine was getting married and I offered to coordinate her wedding as a gift. Even as a guest and coordinator, I enjoyed working with the bride and groom, their families, the bridal party, and the guests to make each moment special. I got to do the behind-the-scenes work to let the bride and groom shine. At that point, my husband saw something in me; he saw how much I loved and thrived at being a planner and coordinator and encouraged me to start my own business. So I did. I created a website, set up my instagram, and created business cards. I started reaching out to friends who got engaged and offered my coordinating and planning services. Some were interested, some were not. But each time I worked, I came home so happy and fulfilled. I found something I truly enjoyed and felt that I thrived in!

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I learn new lessons each wedding/event I coordinate. I’ve made mistakes, but I try to learn from them each time. I hold myself to a very high standard, but I have to remind myself that I’m human and I’m allowed to make mistakes (although I still never want to make any mistakes). I think it’s important to recognize that I’m not the expert in each area of the wedding industry — my job is to bring all those vendors and families together for a beautiful, special day.

I am part of a team that specializes in venue management. As a venue management team, RK Green Studios and Events can help you turn your home or property into a wedding venue. Our team meets with the clients, contracts with vendors, implements your desired routines for your property, advertises, and leads tours with potential clients. And the best part for the property owners? Our services are free to them!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

  • Balboa park picnic — a great spot to unwind, stroll through some museums, and have a fun photo shoot
  • Acai bowl at Ocean Beach — so relaxing and yummy
  • Ruth’s Chris — the filet is amazing, but we did happy hour at the bar and it was superb!
  • Shout House Dueling Pianos — such a fun time! Once I got to sing the “Cups” song on top of the piano with my drink glass
  • Hotel Del Coronado — the beach, the hotel, the view
  • Bali Hai — for the view and Mai Tais!

There are so many good restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries in San Diego, it’s hard to pick just a few! Go try them all!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dad – My dad brought me into the wedding industry at age 12, working alongside him as a wedding photographer. I think I inherited his love for weddings and how to make a couple feel special. He also has brought me onto his team as a photographer, videographer, and now event coordinator. He encourages me to build my business and be myself within it.

My mom – My mom always knows the right way to do things: how to set a table, what the flow/timeline of a bridal shower should be, how to add little touches to a party to make it feel effortless. I watched her strategize and foresee possible pitfalls even before a party began, and I work to do the same for all my events.

My husband – My husband gave me the encouragement to build a business around who I am and what I love to do — to use my strengths to help others. He helped me invent the tagline: Organization • Unity • Enthusiasm. He saw those as my natural abilities that I use to bring events together.
