Meet Lisa Kimberly: Fine Art Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Kimberly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
My inspiration can change from one mood to the next, but currently it’s: Hawaiian landscapes; horror movies that are visually arresting, like “Annihilation” and “Midsommar”; nude portraiture, flowers/flora; the photographer Ellie Pritts’ dreamy psychedelic colors; mental health awareness; and all things pink.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Creating images is a way for me to alter my reality, and I feel that my best work borders on surreal or dreamlike; a place that exists somewhere between fantasy and reality, between the dark and the light. I’m most proud of my art that was born out of sheer experimentation that evolved eventually into a very personal series, such as my long-exposure self-portrait composites, or my “hello I exist” series that involves close-ups of colorful plants. Even though I sell some of my art online, most of it is really just made for me, an outlet for whatever I’m working through in my head, or what I’m inspired by, or just from a sheer desire to create.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live on Oahu, which is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen! If a close friend were to visit, here’s some things we’d do (let’s assume a global pandemic/quarantine restrictions wasn’t happening): -Go to Duke’s in Waikiki for a Mai Tai on their beachfront deck. Yes, it’s touristy, but still fun! -Do as many hikes as my visiting friend wants! Some of my favorites are. Maunawili Falls, Crouching Lion, Wiliwilinui, and the pink pillbox. -Rent a boat and go out to the sandbar in Kaneohe, which is one of my favorite ways to spend a day on the water. -NORTH SHORE FOOD TRUCKS! -Check out some naval history aboard the USS Missouri or the USS Arizona Memorial. -Kareoke and soju cocktails at Cafe Duck Butt, which is the greatest name ever. -Show off my favorite beaches, like Bellows, Waimanalo, and a secret beach that a friend lives right next to.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends and family, for coming to my art shows, sharing my work, and always supporting my artistic endeavors. My fellow photographer friends, in real life and online, with whom I’ve been able to bounce ideas off of, collaborate with, and be inspired by.
