We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Rivera and Mercedes Ayala Rivera and Ayala and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leslie Rivera and Mercedes Ayala, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
We started our business in 2020 in the middle of a pandemic and without a loan. We are building our business from scratch with our own money from our pockets. We did not ask for help from family or friends we decided to become our own bosses and make a decision that during this time is very scary and edgy due to financial uncertainties. We both have full time jobs, plan on pursuing careers, and have children to feed, We knew that starting a business was going to be rough for a while but surprisingly business picked up very fast. For us in our career at the moment this was taking a risk, not sure if it would or will work out. There have been those thoughts “what if we are doing this for no reason?” but without taking that blind step willingly pushing ourselves into deep endeavors we would never know what success may come from this. Behinds every successful individual in society there had to be some kind of risk that was taken or some type of challenge that was pursued until success was achieved. Lovely Laughs Lashes is built on a mindset that regardless if we are supported or not we are not going to stop until we reach the top and we are willing to take whatever risk that may be to become successful as entrepreneurs and business women. Risk will always play a role in your future. Risk is a good thing because it shows that no matter what happens we are serious about our goals in life and we are willing to do what it takes to get to where we both want to be in life.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our business is a small lash line that we are beginning to expand on we recently came out with eyeliner glue pens, some shirts and will soon be adding more cosmetics to our line. We are different than other businesses because we are two best friends who started without any help from family or needing any loans. We also are not ever competing with each other. People always say you should never go into business with your best friend because a lot of friends that go into business together don’t stay friends and end up having problems. We both push each other to do great and we compliment each other all of the time, we aren’t trying to compete or get over on one another. We are proud of our most recent eyeliner glue adhesive pens as well as the new line of dramatic eyelashes that we currently have for sale. We are excited to finally get our shirts screen printed on as well as adding our lash book to the line. Today we are where we are because we keep on pushing even on our hard days or weeks, we just keep up with our orders and promoting our business and that is how we have gotten to where we are today. It is never easy to accomplish big goals in life, most of our time during the week is devoted to our jobs and then the business we hardly ever get time for our families because we are trying to build our brand, we have learned to make time for our family as well as some free time to do other things that need to be done by making sure we organize our week to where we are able to have some free space. Some things we have learned is if it seems too easy you are doing something wrong, if you aren’t promoting yourself enough or putting yourself out there and you feel that you are going to make money or you feel you are going to get more following then that is a false hope. We have learned this is a lot of hard work and dedication but at the end its going to be worth it. We just want to empower other women to stop making excuses and get up and do what you have to do to be happy remember that opportunities are never ending here in America and us as women need to stand together to become successful and keep on beating the statistics.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are from San Diego, California so there are so many amazing places to go but if our best friend was visiting us here in the sunny city. We would start off the first day by taking them to walk at the beach and see sunset cliffs, we would book a whale watch to go on with them, and then go out to eat tacos at Salud in Logan heights. Then the next time we would take them to the zoo or sea world so they could see the orca encounter and then after go eat some lunch in north park at a sushi spot called RAKITORI Japanese Pub&Grill. On the third day we would take them to eat breakfast at the omelete factory in Santee, ca and then go to the beautiful Coronado island and go on a boat ride. On the fourth day we would take them to mission bay so they could have some fun at the famous Belmont park and we would eat at the taco shop there called Mr. Ruribertos, then we would take them to eat the extraordinary desserts in downtown for something sweet. On the last day we would take them out to Lake Murray to do some kayaking, then we could go to balboa park and go to a couple of the museums and get some Mexican desserts at la Michoacana in Chula vista, California. We could also go and get some tacos at Tacos El Gordo before they leave you cant forget about the tacos here in san Diego are the best. Other places we would recommend to anyone coming to our city is Seaport village, Downtown Gaslamp district, and going to see a padres game would make you really feel like you are coming to visit the city of San Diego. We would also recommend going to visit Chicano park and checking out Por Vida the Coffee shop, and the barrio street tacos, and the amazing brewery there called border x as well as Mariscos el pulpo barrio Logan if you would like to get some bomb seafood. Also going to downtown third avenue would be something nice to go to. We also have the safari park in Escondido, California, and the beautiful beaches Carlsbad, del mar and Oceanside. So many fun things to do if you are visiting I would come for two weeks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to thank each other as best friends first off because we both have pushed each other to get further in life and to pursue our goals and what better way than to do it together? Also some of our inspiration comes from God because without him we would not be able to wake up in the morning, we believe he gave us our ability to have the creative ideas we come up with. We would both like to shout out our moms because without them pushing us to live a successful life we would not be trying to do what we are doing today. Lastly but not least we’d like to shout out all the successful women in society or even friends who have strived to become there own bosses, women entrepreneurs and seeing them and how they started and how they have become successful is another inspiration of ours. Successful women that have really empowered and inspired us. Some that stand out to us are Erika Aguilar from PHP, Beyonce Knowles, Jenny Solares, an upcoming social media influencer, Bella tha Rapper a new upcoming artist, Reverie as well another underground rap artist that’s been out for a while and is starting to really be recognized, and Salice Rose social media influencer. We both deserve recognition because we both came up with the Idea to become entrepreneurs and a small business owner.
