We had the good fortune of connecting with Lee Schoenbart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lee, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from the community of Erdenheim, just on the outskirts of Philadelphia, PA. I moved to California in 1973, so after all these years, I suppose that makes me a native. My grandmother and brother were very big on honesty and integrity. In real estate, I would add to that transparency. I believe these three principles are very important in any relationship, especially when working with people making what might be the largest purchase ever in their life. When I arrived in California, I worked in the music industry, wrote a self-syndicated music column for 20 years and was an associate editor with our daily newspaper before earning my real estate license in 2005.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

When my partner and I purchased our home in 2000, his Realtor® was on top of everything and very detail-oriented. I remembered that I wanted excellent service and consideration with an astute eye for detail… and that’s what my clients get from me when buying or selling a home.

A writer, editor and publicist all my adult life, I left my assistant metro and community news editorships at The San Diego Union-Tribune to pursue my “dream career” in real estate.

Previously, I worked as the managing editor for numerous business and entertainment industry publications including the monthly Comstock’s: The Business of California’s Capital Region and the quarterly Comstock’s: The Business of Northern Nevada, as well as San Diego’s North County Entertainer and Del Mar Times. I was also the publisher of a series of entertainment publications in the Bay Area: San Francisco Hot Ticket!, Guide Magazine San Francisco and San Francisco Style Monthly.

The last time I returned from the Bay Area in 1999, I became managing editor of content for Solution Media’s Internet music company SpinRecords.com followed by the Del Mar Times editorship and a season as the Del Mar Fair’s nighttime media information officer.

Under my former nom de plume, “Jeff Wilson,” I created a market niche for my self-syndicated column, Hot Wax Music Report, covering industry trends and authoring exclusive celebrity interviews from 1976-1996. During this time, I worked on a number of publicity-related projects with Motown, Megatone and Moby Dick Records, and was a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Science (NARAS), producers of the annual Grammy Awards program.

I also contributed to the national best-sellers “Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme” by Mary Wilson, and J. Randy Taraborrelli’s unauthorized biographies of Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, respectively, “Call Her Miss Ross” and “Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness.”

As a Realtor® for 17 years, my pledge remains the same – to bring that same energy, integrity and attention to detail of 30-plus years in the publishing and entertainment industries to my buyers and sellers real estate needs.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I’m a beach person, go figure, here in sunny San Diego. My favorite beach is La Jolla Shores, one of the cleanest and easiest to walk. The best restaurant is the Marine Room, which literally extends to the beach and where you can see from one end of the beach to the other as though you were looking through an aquarium. You can walk the shoreline from the restaurant all the way to Scripps Pier, part of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Lots of surfing, swimming and beachcombing. The “main drag” at the Shores, if you can call it that because it’s only two blocks long, is dotted with more than a dozen restaurants.

Nearly at the end of the county, where San Diego meets Mexico, is the tiny town of Coronado — home of the world-famous Hotel Del Coronado. Great digs, great dining and another wonderful shoreline to walk.

The best restaurant in San Diego, in my humble opinion, would have to be the newly reopened Red Fox Steakhouse with it’s imported and well-preserved English wooden interior and 1940ish-1950ish dining room ambience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My brother Eddie was my biggest influencer. My friend, the late Mary Wilson of The Supremes. I’ve had four wonderful mentors at Prudential California Realty, now Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties: Stephanie Murphy, Nikki Shultz, Marianne “Boo” Shuler and Lauren Haskin. In an effort to give back what was so freely given to me, I mentor new agents and gladly share my knowledge and experience.
