Meet Lauren Souter: Photographer & Retoucher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Souter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
This question really made me stop and think because so much has changed since I started this business! My life is completely different now than it was a couple of years ago and I think my goals and even my photography style have changed along with it. I started out working mainly with families with young kids, and while I still do that, I find myself drawn more towards working with people in the creative field such as models, local musicians, start-up businesses etc. I am pretty much open to taking on any photography challenge which has led me to some very fun shoots over this past year! I really can’t wait to see where the next couple of years take me and who I will get to meet.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My photography journey has been easy and so smooth. I started out doing family photos for family friends for free and then started booking clients. I am self taught with my camera and honestly still don’t even know all the correct camera terms! I can’t really say what sets me apart from others, but I do know that I put a lot of thought into how I edit and the angles I shoot from. I hope for my photos to make you stop, look at them a little longer, and feel something when you do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many good spots in and around San Diego! Some of my favorite days have been spent walking around Seaport Village or hitting the wineries in Temecula. We also have the best local breweries, Belching Beaver, Stave and Nail and Burgeon just to name a few favorites. Also, a few years ago I rediscovered the fall outdoor plays at Moonlight Amphitheater and have really been looking forward to going back!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I know that every parent probably dedicates their success to their kids, but I really gotta give this one to my boy haha. A big giant shoutout to my 5 year old son Deacon! That kid has put up with a camera in his face since he was born and has always been so great about it! He’s a complete ham in front of a camera lens and has now started to take some great photos of his own. He uses my old camera and goes on shoots with me and has become a great little helper and photographer! He’s my motivation and inspiration behind everything, and I hope I can take some photos that he thinks are cool and is proud of.
