We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Ferree Bash and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren Ferree, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
To be honest, I fell into running a small business, kinda on accident. Like many folks, I was unemployed during the pandemic, and while I thought I was going to work on sets as a video producer, all productions were on a halt and I went back to the drawing board. And like more folks, I downloaded TIkTok, and starting making videos. There was an “ah-ha!” moment, when I realized that I could combine my skills and experience of producing short-form videos with my passion and interest in sustainability, and I began creating TikTok content about the climate crisis, sustainable living, and plant-based recipes. Now, I am a proud small business owner where I enjoy my days creating content that I hope inspires, educates, and empowers my community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create short-form videos about sustainability, regenerative living, and the climate crisis. As a video producer, I love that the social platforms encourage creators to release “series” and I’m very excited about the series I’ve created, like “that one girl” and “but make it sustainable” and the future series I will create!
I’m honored to have built such an amazing, authentic community online, and I hope that my content serves as a resource for them to dive deeper into their sustainability journey. I love to keep my channels as a place for dialogue and do my best to answer all questions.
I’ve learned so much as a sustainability creator. Unfortunately, the history of the online sustainability space has been represented predominately by white women, and I am learning (and unlearning) how to be an intersectional environmentalist, and therefore when to shut up and listen, and when to speak up in unity.
I hope the world knows that it’s never too late to start. We can be so mean to ourselves that we’re too (fill in the blank) to do (fill in the next blank) but following our passions and listening to intuition is so important, and allows us to live with purpose and experience the fulfillment of our contribution to the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would get up early and take them surfing in Malibu, either at Sunset point or all the way up to Leo Carillo. From there we would go get a snack and smoothie at Erewhon (pricey, but so delicious!) and then hit La La Land for a coffee on the way home. Then we’d probably go ride bikes along the strand down to Venice and through the marina, and pick up a bottle of natural wine from “Vin on Rose” on our way home. Then either pickup a salad pizza from Abbott’s or make dinner at home to pack as a picnic and go listen to the live jazz music on the Ashland Hill grassy knoll near the beach for sunset.

Other places I would love to show them would be our amazing museums like The Getty, The Broad, or LACMA. I’d love to take them on the Metro to downtown and we could explore around and get some yummy food at Grand Central Market. I’d look into taking a boat out from the Marina so we could go watch dolphins (or whales!) depending the season. And maybe we’d go see a concert / show somewhere on the East Side or in WeHo.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to acknowledge the folks of the Surfrider Foundation. After the presidential election in 2016 I was desperate to join the climate movement, I even googled “how to stop offshore drilling in Los Angeles” and I found their “drilling is killing” campaign to protect the ocean’s and beaches. From there, I started volunteering at their beach cleanups and other department efforts, and joined a beautiful community of fellow ocean and earth stewards.
