We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystin Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Krystin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Thought process implies this was planned from the beginning, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. This started as an experiment, with the goal of making high quality lotion for myself. So, I put my gloves on and got to work rendering my tallow over 3 days to make it as pure as possible. At the end of those 3 days I discovered a fantastic face cream that my skin absolutely loved. Naturally, I posted a picture on social media of it. In doing so, I discovered a need. The more research I did the more I discovered people LOVE tallow for skincare for it’s dense nutrients and natural vitamins. I had so much interest from friends and family that I decided to let the business fall in my lap and get to work. It’s a discovery in progress, with the goal being to create and share high quality, natural tallow skincare.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is based in skincare; but, my skincare is unique. What sets my product and business apart from others is that I have chosen to base my skincare on what our ancestors used, tallow. My goal is to make all natural, nutrient dense skincare that is based on a “no waste” mentality. When our ancestors used their cattle as meat they chose to utilize the leftover hard fat as a skin protectant and moisturizer. This is what I have chosen to do as well. It just so happens this beef suet (very specific hard fat) which I render into pure tallow is packed with vitamins and nutrients as well. The process of making my product is long, I choose to render (or purify) my tallow 4 times which takes around 3 days to complete. This long process means I have to plan ahead with time management to create a pure, quality product. I am constantly learning lessons every day from the challenges of creating new products to marketing to managing a business alongside being a present mother to my young daughters. What I want to leave the world with is knowing that my brand and my products are quality, they take time and fine tuning – all of this to make a product that digs deep back into the roots of our skincare origins. In addition, when you use my product know you are supporting a hands on education for my daughters in the creative, learning process of this business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When any friend visits my first go-to recommendation is to start in Oceanside, hop on the train and stop at whichever stops interest them. I usually enjoy stopping in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach, taking a few stops to enjoy some views along the way until getting to downtown SD. Of course Balboa, Seaport VIllage and Gaslamp would be on the list, rounding out the day(s) by taking an Uber to Mission Bay and hopping on a couple of SUPs. To get them to grasp the enormity that is San Diego County I would take them to Julian, go for a hike, then pop over to Mom’s pies for a bumbleberry pie with cinnamon ice cream. On another day I would take them to the Wild Animal Park (Yes, the Safari Park,,, but it is forever the Wild Animal Park in my mind! haha). I would end their trip with a relaxed day in Carlsbad and/or Oceanside, walking the little downtown and laying out on the beach.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Thus far in my business journey everyone has been incredibly supportive, though there are 3 people I would like to dedicate this to in particular. First, my mom, Netta. She has demonstrated to me what it is to follow your creative hobby and share it with those you love. She is an incredible ceramicist. Second, my good friend and neighbor, Logan. Without her shove in the direction of tallow skincare I probably would not have discovered the benefits of tallow skincare or launched my business at all. And third, my husband, Sean; he has been so supportive of me the entire way and has been my cheerleader throughout this process.
