We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Patten and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work life balance is always going to be a difficult situation. In addition to running 7 Deadly Confections I continue to work full time at UC Riverside. I have been there for about 12 years and its been a pretty demanding job. When my business initially started it wasn’t a large issue and balance was achieved pretty easily. As we began to grow the strain became larger. Many times I have to ask for multiple days off if I’m prepping for a large order. When you control every facet of a business you take on many roles. Thats the hardest thing to balance even now, because everything requires my attention. My hopes for the future is create and maintain harmony with my work life balance.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started this business because I believe the market lacked vegan dessert options. I strived to create a product that would stand out and that people would enjoy. I actually have a degree in English because at one point in my life I expected to go in a different direction. I did not go to culinary school, I am a self taught baker. It wasn’t easy to start the business when you don’t have the experience a pastry chef might have. If I didn’t know how to make something or decorate a certain way I looked it up. I think I am the most proud of where I have taken this business. I have learned many culinary techniques on my own and created an amazing product!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Everyone has different tastes but most people enjoy a relaxing time. We would probably grab a late breakfast at Le Coffee Shop in Temecula or possibly brunch at Wilson Creek Winery. Brunch is a event now a days, it’s just nice to sit, relax and chat with friends. If we had a longer time together maybe we’d go bowling, or attend a Paint & Sip party.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t be successful without the support of my husband and family. They have helped me set up for events and markets. In addition they have been my taste testers for product development. I cannot express how much love and support they’ve given me over the years. No matter what I know they’ll be standing by my side in the future as well!
