We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Kurtz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
What makes me happy is my connection with people, my self care practices, being in nature or in the ocean and living a life of purpose. It feels good to have deeper conversations with people. It makes me feel like I am a part of something more important. I believe having a self care routine daily is another key to happiness. I feel so much better when I wake up and meditate, stretch or go to the ocean or take a walk as opposed to simply starting my day without doing one or more of these activities. It’s hard to break away from technology or the chatter in your mind so having even a small break and being outside fills me up so much. We all want to have jobs we love, friends and family that care for us and to feel secure both financially and personally. What takes happiness and joy up a notch is when you truly know you are fulfilling what you came into this world to do.
Happiness is something we search for our whole lives. If we can stay as present as we can in the daily moments of our lives, we can find happiness I believe.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Certified Health & Life Coach. I help women who struggle with anxiety, lack of purpose and clarity reconnect with themselves and gain confidence for greater success in their career and personal life. After graduating from UCSC with an Environmental Studies degree I moved to Kauai and spent many years as a massage therapist, esthetician and yoga teacher. I later earned my coaching certification which blended all the modalities I had learned both in California and Hawaii.
It wasn’t always easy for me. I struggled myself with anxiety attacks, chronic back pain and financial debt. I was unclear on my exact career path and had this feeling like something wasn’t quite right. I was exhausted and burned out with the work I was doing. I know what it feels like to not feel good or that there must be more to life!
The lessons I’ve learned is that it takes perseverance, support, and stepping out of your comfort zone to grow a business. You have to also be willing to get things wrong, to not be perfect and to fail sometimes.
Coaches have helped me (and still do!) get to that next level. Hiring a coach is a great thing to do when you’ve done all you can do on your own or you feel stuck. My coaching programs offer people the right support, system and accountability so they can have long term success. I offer the space for people to grow and learn more about themselves so that changes stick around long after we’ve worked together.
It is my mission to serve others so that they can create a life they love in all the areas of their life – career, relationships, health and spirituality. I am very grateful that I get to do this work and contribute to people becoming happier:)
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would hang out: Beaches: all around Encinitas for sure!
Dining: Coffee Coffee, Nectarine Grove, Le Papageuyo, Pandora Pizza, Union Pub
Visit: Meditation Gardens, Botanical Gardens, Annie’s Canyon, Torrey Pines
Exciting places: Belly Up, Del Mar Fairgrounds, Hot Air Balloon Ride
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been so many people that have helped me to become a better individual. It’s so hard to say just one! My boss, Phil Jones, at the company that I worked at for many years doesn’t realize how much he helped me grow as a person and now entrepreneur. My first yoga teacher, Bhavani Maki set me on the life long path of being a yoga student/teacher/seeker. There are so many books that have influenced me, “Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself” and “The UltraMind Solution” to name a few.
I would mostly have to give the biggest shoutout to my mom. She’s been my best teacher and supporter in so many ways. She went and got her law degree in her 40’s with three kids at home. She’s worked with troubled youth, taught classes at a junior college and lives completely independently to this day living her life on her terms. And, she has a huge heart. She is a very kind and compassionate person. She wants to contribute in the ways she can (she volunteers her time to local charities and hospice) so that she can be a part of making the world a better place. I am grateful to have her as a mother.
