Meet Kate Coolens

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Coolens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I used to overwork myself and compromise my wellness, health, and relationships. I grew up with the mindset of hustling hard for money, but as I got older, I learned the importance of balance. I set boundaries around my working hours, make time to work out, engage in creative activities, cook meals at home, and spend quality time with my husband or call my family who live far away. Without balance, the energy I give to each job and responsibility becomes compromised. Balance is important to me because I have many different buckets to fill to feel whole.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is my versatility in photography and my resourcefulness. I’ve learned how to create quality work with what I have while still delivering what my clients envision. My journey wasn’t always easy! I faced burnout from constantly working, but I overcame it by setting boundaries, prioritizing my well-being, and making time for family. Along the way, I learned the importance of knowing your value, continuously improving yourself, and never settling for less than you deserve. I want people to know that my brand is built on passion, authenticity, and growth, and that the right opportunities will come when you stay true to your worth!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d start the day with a hike at Annie’s Canyon Trail cause it’s a quick one but the views are so worth it and I know they’d love it. After that, we’d swing by 6 Grados in Paradise Hills for coffee because it’s one of my go-to spots.
Then we’d get ready and head to brunch at Cocina 35 in Coronado. Mimosas, beach views, and their chilaquiles are honestly some of the best in town. After that, we’d take the ferry just to enjoy the ocean views and vibe a little, then walk around Harbor Dr and downtown. We’d probably end the day grabbing drinks or catching a game at Petco Park.
That’s just day one though. I’d for sure pack the rest of the week with more beaches, food spots, and fun little hidden gems around San Diego.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my story to my mom and brother, who have been with me throughout this journey, and to my dad in heaven, whom I promised I would do better in life as I grow older.
