Meet Karen Meisels | Professional and Nutrition Coach and Behavioral Health Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Meisels and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, how do you think about risk?
When I think about risk I think about Brené Brown’s book Daring Greatly. Being brave enough to be seen exactly as we are, with all of our fears and imperfections. For me, that is what risk is about. Feeling the fear and doing it anyway. My whole life I’ve learned by doing and figuring it out. I am unconventional, and that means I do things from the heart, with passion, verve, and a little bit of fear. I do not follow a formula nor emulate others. I have an understanding of how others before me have done things and I take what resonates with my spirit and leave the rest. The fear of not doing something is greater than the fear of staying the same and not evolving or growing. Risk has played a role in my resiliency, my continuous curiosity about life, myself, and others, and the courage to be vulnerable, to be seen, to have an impact. Taking risks has allowed me to experience my greatest triumphs, and to learn from my failures, to believe in myself, to move through obstacles so I can get to the other side where opportunities are. Taking risks means I’m willing to be brave and step out of my comfort zone and open myself to greatness, even if I fail. I’ve reinvented myself 4 times. I could not have done it without taking risks, being humble enough to start over, and willing to choose courage over comfort. Both in my personal and professional life, if I want to have deeper experiences and relationships I have had to risk being vulnerable, being seen, and expressing my voice.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Have you ever looked at your relationship with food as a metaphor for your relationship with yourself, people, money, and career? Can you imagine the transformation you will have when you begin to evolve your relationship with, and mindset around, food? That’s exactly what I help people do. I use food as a vehicle helping people transform their lives. I’m a Transformational Nutrition Coach focusing on health and wellness in physical nutrition, mental nutrition, and spiritual nutrition. My method allows people to transform their health and their life at the same time. I also have a specialty in Plant Based Nutrition and Ayurvedic Nutrition. I utilize these principles to partner with my clients in realigning them with their best selves. My clients aren’t typical and neither are their programs. I create customized plans for each one depending on their needs, goals, challenges, work life, relationships, lifestyle, and environment. Each program starts with an assessment of their needs, nutrition, lifestyle, relationships, and mindset. This will be the foundation of the unique programs created to meet their needs and help them transform. Together, we’ll do everything from grocery shopping, cooking, and pantry overhauls in order to align them with who they are becoming. Together, we’ll create sustainable results by meeting and putting accountability measures in place to keep them moving forward. My journey to coaching was organic, no pun intended! As with everything I passionately pursue, the journey started with my own transformation. I went from working in entertainment to working in the medical field, then the addiction and mental health field. My lifestyle was constant traveling, numerous conferences and business dinners. My adrenals were shot, my cholesterol was high, I had constant fatigue, and was always trying to balance exercise (which I love) for my physical, emotional, and mental well being. I developed a torn hamstring that caused severe inflammation and pain for nearly 2 years and zapped me of my energy. After going to numerous specialists and using different modalities, one day I watched The Game Changers documentary and had a renewed motivation to switch to a plant based diet. I was already pretty healthy but was still eating dairy and animal protein. Within 3 weeks my inflammation decreased. I then decided to go all in, get certified in plant based nutrition, and coach others struggling with diseases or other health issues, as well as those who felt an imbalance and those who simply wanted to realign with their passions. It starts with nutrition. There are so many delicious, hearty meals you can eat to feel nourished, satisfied, and energized, while also losing or maintaining a healthy body weight. The key is that food is medicine and what you put in your body is directly related to how you feel and how your body, brain, and emotions function. Once I made the commitment, I focused on maintaining balance in all areas of my life, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. My greatest challenge was still my lifestyle. When COVID hit, and we went into lockdown, I restructured my daily routine in order to better serve my goals. With daily intention, I became the best version of myself and feel more vibrant than I did in my 30’s. Age is just a number! I launched my coaching practice last year, and through word of mouth, it started to grow. I have a commitment and a willingness to step outside of my comfort zone. I offer more than just the tools people need to find creative solutions to their lifestyle challenges and it begins with what they eat. My clients do not have to be plant based, they simply have to have a willingness to look at the whole perspective of their lives and be willing to make small shifts to restore vibrancy in their overall health. People that are motivated and inspired to explore their relationship with their food and themselves, and are committed to action by investing in their quality of life. I love serving my clients, customizing a coaching plan for each one that helps them thrive and enjoy life, and watching them transform in so many areas of their lives! I want the world to know that investing in yourself is the only thing that will give you an advantage to thrive. It’s the small changes done every day that add up to big results in your life. So I ask, is your health worth investing in? Starting with your body…are you worth it?! Let me guide you in improving the quality of your life. I want the world to know that when you do what you love, building a business that satisfies your soul isn’t all that difficult.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It would be a relaxing trip with beautiful beaches, lots of nature, time with friends, and definitely some pampering! I would definitely drive up the coast and stop at Point Dume and enjoy the surfers and beach, then continue North to Big Sur and spend the weekend at The Esalen Center for salt baths and yoga and some spiritual realignment. On our way back we would stop in Santa Barbara and dine at Rosewood Miramar with a gorgeous view and spend a night or two there. We would definitely enjoy their sense spa and get massages and unwind. We would visit friends that live nearby and on the drive home stop at Malibu Farm on the Pier and have a plant based meal with friends. The rest of the week would be rollerblading on the bike path, maybe a Dodger game, walking around Abbot Kinney and having dinner at Plant Food and Wine. We might go to Silverlake one day and eat at Little Pine for brunch before she heads back to NY.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Brené Brown, Daring Greatly set me up unbeknownst to me, and Rising Strong helped me to rise up from it and stand in my power, in my truth. I have numerous mentors that I follow that give me strength, grace, humor, courage, drive, and continue to support me in dreaming big, believing big, and expecting big. Dara Torres – “Age is just a number” – this woman came back against all odds in her 40’s to win another Olympic medal 🏅 against teens and 20 year olds. Tracee Ells Ross – “I am learning every day to allow the space between where I am and where I want to be to inspire me and not terrify me.” Mel Robbins – ““You Are One Decision Away from a Completely Different Life” and “There will always be someone who can’t see your worth. Don’t let it be you” Gabby Bernstein – “True abundance isn’t based on our net worth, it’s based on our self-worth.” and “The universe is always working on our behalf but not always working on our time.” Tony Robbins – “Execution trumps Knowledge” “Become the Destroyer of Limitations in Your Own Mind” All these people inspire me, grow me, encourage me, guide me to trust myself, my path, my passion, and to trust the rhythm of divine timing while learning, growing, and expanding my vision. The magic is in the journey, the losses, the heartaches, the sweat, the triumphs, every single time.
