We had the good fortune of connecting with Kandi Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kandi, how do you think about risk?
I relate risk to fear. I believe that if you are fearful to make a decision, then that probably means there is a risk involved.

When I was beginning to think about starting a skincare company, I was fearful of failure and was especially worried about the risk of losing money. I also understood that there was a risk of my product not being accepted by my target market.

Fear of the unknown held me back from releasing my product to the world for a few months. During that time, I went back and forth with myself debating if I should take the risk and put my work out there.

Even though I was fearful of failure, I still told myself that I could do it and ultimately had nothing to loose. I told myself if I did fail, the experience would be a great learning lesson.

One day at the end of April 2021, I woke up and decided that this would be the day I debut my company, Rinse, to the world!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Im excited to achieve my dream of owning and operating my own farm. Specifically, my goal is to grown organic produce on the island of Hawai’i and provide food for my community. I am Kānaka Maoli, or Native Hawaiian, and I’d love to return to my ancestors’ land and grow nutritious, as well as native, food for my people. On this farm I’d also grow native medicinal plants and use the healing properties of these plants to treat folks.

Since starting my company I have learned to overcome one of the biggest challenges there is- yourself. I now know that you can achieve any dream you have by consistently putting in the work, never loosing sight of your goal, and having a positive mindset.

I am currently working as a gardener, barista, and at a farm to pay my bills. At each of these gigs I am absorbing all of the knowledge about what owning and operating a successful business consists of. In this period of my life, I am learning and growing to be able to one day run my own farm.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love house guests! I’d take them to get a coffee at my favourite hole-in-wall coffee shop for the best iced coffee in town, then for a swim at the beach in crystal-clear blue waters, and then hit an eclectic thrift store on our way to a local natural wine bar. I love being in beautiful spaces; whether that be a colourful restaurant, a cozy bookstore, or an intimate art show.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my Shoutout to myself. For not giving up on a dream, and putting in the work and time to achieve that dream!
