We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Griffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, how do you define success?
Success to me is whatever you want it to be, whatever your personal level of success is. Too many people get to caught up on the success of others and start comparing their levels to the next person. I tried that when I was younger and it really didn’t work out for me. ‘Keeping up with the Jone’s” and thinking the ‘Grass is always greener on the other side’ really leads you in the wrong direction. Set your own personal goals, work towards them at your own pace, hold yourself accountable and don’t be afraid to fail. You will be surprised on how far you can go! My mom always told me to ‘Never stop learning, READ, READ, READ’. If you never stop learning, you will continue to create your own level of SUCCESS!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The thing I’m most proud of is how I have built a platform to be able to impact people of all ages. When it comes to my Pure Joy Basketball company, I used to the game of basketball as a tool to help guide and teach me the life skills it takes to be an adult in this ever changing world. I’m excited everyday I get the chance to get in front of a player. As a basketball player, your coaches and mentors will really dictate how far your journey will go. I’ve had so many coaches along my career as a player that have formed me into the person I am today. Knowing the importance of my role in a player’s journey is something I take extremely serious. I got to where I am today by truly believing in myself. I realized that I could set all the goals in the world but if I didn’t believe in myself there was no way I would accomplish anything. Dealing with failure has been my biggest challenge. As a player and business owner you’re faced with little failures daily. If you can get hit, get back up, prepare yourself and learn from you last mistake, you will be on the daily path to success! A couple lessons I’ve learned along the way is as simple as becoming as ‘Present’ as possible and staying true to yourself. Understanding that I can only control what I can control and not worrying about yesterday or tomorrow. Today, and the present moment is the only thing I can try to control and that is exactly what I do. Another lesson is Staying true to yourself. In this world there are so many distractions and its really easy to get off track. Self-reflecting is key when you want to continue to grow as a person. Progress is progress and when you continue to learn you have no choice but to succeed. Mindset is everything in whatever you do. You can be the most skilled and competitive person but if you don’t have the proper mindset its going to be extremely difficult to accomplish anything. Pure Joy Basketball is my platform to share the mindset it will take to be the best version of yourself. Teaching the game of basketball is easy but the most important thing is teaching players to be better people. Basketball is a tool to showcase the person you will be in this world. The game will only take you so far, its the way you treat others and carry yourself that will lead you to success!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego has so many pockets and is one of the best city’s to visit in California. You can’t go wrong in showing family and friends around, it really depends on what their vibes are and what they want to experience. But, one place I will definitely take them is Maya’s Cookies, one of the best cookies I have ever tasted, and they are Vegan!!!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my parents. Growing up you really don’t realize everything your parents do for you. I can honestly say I took them for granted without even realizing it. My parents have supported and pushed me to be the best version of myself. They laid the foundation of my character, work ethic, and will to succeed. I was the youngest of four siblings and family has been everything for me since day one. My parents are wise and so special! Anyone who has had the pleasure to meet them would tell you. Whether its my dad barely meeting you for the first time, but sparking up a conversation with like he’s known you for years or my mom trying to help and make your life easier with her kindheartedness. You will definitely get a sense of ‘being seen’ around them. There’s no better feeling when someone recognizes you:)
