We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Rifkin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance was turned upside down in March for everyone. Happy to say we have embraced the life part and am having so much fun spending time with my wife and kids. Would have never had so many great memories otherwise. It has also required that I prioritize and be more efficient than ever. Definitely making every second count in between home schooling and work.
What should our readers know about your business?
Building our company, Flatworks Displays has been a test of persistence and the ability to adapt to changing times. We came up with a easy to assemble trade show booth solution that required no tools for set up. Our goal was to make the experience of exhibiting at a convention center easier, safer and more affordable. If you compare our system to most in the market we are a fraction of the cost, weight and set up time which equals a ton of saving for the business owner and the employee setting up at the show. We designed the booth so that all the parts pack flat into a crate the size of a small coffee table. That crate then becomes your table so you do not have to wait for your pallet or crate at the end of the show. Anyone that has exhibited and waited for a crate know how long that can take. Not something you want to be doing after a long 3 – 4 day show. We set up to solve all of the pain points of exhibiting by reducing the cost of the booth, freight, labor for set up, shipping and handling and storage. Many of our clients have said the purchase paid for itself after 1 to 2 shows. Currently all trade shows are in a holding pattern which is the core of our business. During this time we have challenged our self to come up with new designs and work on project management efficiencies so that we are ready to scale when business picks up again. Excited to say we designed some new light-weight, waterproof options for outdoor events as well as uses for in store demos and home office solutions. Our mission is to make exhibiting fun, easy and affordable.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many incredible spots in San Diego, but everyone needs to sink their feet in the sand when they step off a long plane ride. Our favorite spot is Cardiff Reef since you have plenty of beach to set up shop as well as access to plenty of restaurants and bars with beautiful ocean views (Pacific Coast Grill, Ki’s, Tower 13, Las Olas, Chart House and you can’t forget the Kraken!) A bike ride down the coast to Torrey Pines is always a nice way to see the coast line of North County. So many other great places to hike in North County are the mushroom caves and San Deguito park in Solana Beach. One of our favorite nights (pre-covid) would be to eat dinner (Alce, Pacifica Del Mar, Pacific Coast Grill or Cicciotti’s) and then see a show at the Belly Up.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife’s support and input has been the key to the success in all of my endeavors. In many cases she has come up with the critical idea that shifted many of the breakthroughs. In addition, she is the balance needed to keep me from jumping in head first without looking. It never hurts to have a brilliant attorney on your side when negotiating contracts and navigating the winding road of business.
