We had the good fortune of connecting with John Barry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Mahatma Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. What it means to me is that I must live to create change in my community and through my actions of serving others. Living a life that exemplifies my beliefs of kindness, compassion, tolerance, and love to everyone. I believe that if we all strove to live this ideal the world would be a better place.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We started Rollin’ From The Heart as a way to try and cope with the incredibly painful loss of our son Ian and try and turn some of our grief and suffering into goodness and joy. Also to keep us connected to the things he loved, skateboarding, surfing, and being in the great outdoors. It was tremendously difficult because the grief was so overwhelming and debilitating that at times it felt like we couldn’t continue. But each time we held a skate or surf event or fundraiser the love, friendship, and joy was so powerful we knew we had to continue. We want people to know that the loss of a child is like no other suffering, that everyone grieves differently (there is no right way), and that if we keep our hearts open and try to channel our grief into joy, amazing things happen.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much to do in greater San Diego you can’t miss. Beach, desert, mountains, or just stay in the city and enjoy the food and sights.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My beautiful wife Alison and daughter Kiva who helped get Rollin’ From The Heart started to honor our son Ian “Poods’ Barry who passed away in 2012.
