We had the good fortune of connecting with Joeryll Irchirl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joeryll, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote has always been “In order to change your life, you must first change your mindset.” This quote has been integral in my everyday adult life since first hearing it in a motivational video on YouTube. At first, I didn’t’ think anything of it, but I began to really think about the meaning of the phrase, and it has allowed me to see the world in a different light. I love this quote, because not only has it allowed me to change my own train of thought, but it has also allowed me to help change the mindsets of other people around me in a good way. By changing my own mindset, I have somehow affected the universe in a positive way to help someone else, inadvertently, become the best version of themselves This phrase has come to mean a lot to me and really helped me change my life in how I interact with the world daily. Over the years I’ve always heard variations of this phrase, but never really put any thought into it. Upon hearing it on YouTube, I was going through a lot in my life and had a lot of major events happen in a six-month period which left me confused and really depressed. Because I was trying to find a way out of the funk that I was in, I began to research ways to help me “snap” myself out of it. At the time, I wasn’t really big on seeking help through doctors. Growing up in a lower-class inner-city family, 1. We could never afford to see help from a psychiatrist and 2. I’ve always been taught to give your problems to God and things will work out. In my instance, that couldn’t have been further from the truth. I’ve always been spiritual, but for the first time in my life, religion wasn’t working, so I was having to figure out another way to help with it all. After searching the internet for information to help with depression, I came across an article that talked about how simple words of affirmation can help improve your daily mind state and overall quality of living. From simple phrases, to full on motivational speeches, the author spoke on how just changing the way they talked to themselves, changed the way they think and helped them manage their depression with the help of psychologists and psychiatrists. After reading the article, I began to just look up motivational videos on YouTube to see if it would help, and honestly it did. So, for the days following, I would wake up and as I was getting ready for my day, I would put on a motivational video at random. I never really looked for a specific topic, but I just out put on one that caught my eye and to my surprised, the videos really helped. I realized that my days started off so much better than I had ever thought they could. Whereas I would wake up dreading the day and what could go wrong, I woke feeling invigorated and enthusiastic about the day. After listening to the videos every day, I always felt prepared and knew I’d be productive. I became more proactive in my day-to-day tasks becoming more of an asset at work. After weeks of this, while getting ready for work, I came across a video that hit hard with me. It spoke to me on a level I can’t even really quantify with words. The video was about changing my mindset as you may have guessed by now. I realized that after weeks of listening to these motivational videos, I’d successfully changed my own mindset to some extent. It’s not to say that I still don’t get depressed or that I don’t deal with adversity and feel really low. On the contrary, I still feel that way often, but now when I get to one of those states, I begin to speak to myself and remind myself of my true power. “I am strong. I am powerful. I am worthy of great things. I am worthy to be great, to be loved, to be successful. I am worthy of every great thing that is in store for me, and it’s on me to go out and achieve that despite whatever the universe sends my way.” From there, the doors of the world opened up to me. I began to be more successful than I have ever been in my life. Don’t get it twisted, I’ve always been successful. What I mean by this, I always accomplished the task that was put in front of me, but when I changed my mindset, I began to accomplished tasks that I never knew I was working towards. I spoke about starting my own business for years, but until I changed my mindset, I would have never had the courage to even research the steps to start it. Kobe Bryant once said in an interview, “I think greatness is to inspire the people next to you.” So, aside from running my own business, I also coach long jump, triple jump, and high jump at Fallbrook High School. As athletes, the teenagers that I coach go through myriads of emotions throughout the school year. Constantly I hear them stating they don’t think they are good enough athletes. or that they are not good enough to be considered a champion. Often, I have to tell them that the reason they aren’t a champion is because you don’t have the champion mindset so don’t doubt yourself. The day you change your mindset and state know that you are a champion, is the day you’ve already won gold. The day you start saying, “I can accomplish this goal and will achieve what I set out to do,” is when you’ve already won. At the end of the day, I want to be great. In order for me to accomplish that, I have to make the people around me great. So, be the change you want to see in the world. Change your mindset. Just a simple thought, can affect your day, your month, your year, and your life. “We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” Mahatma Gandhi
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
MizFitz Radio is an independent owned radio station that’s aimed at providing a platform for independent artists to showcase their skills and learn about the music industry as a whole. Over the past two years, we have grown to over 11,000 listeners monthly at our peak and streaming in over 125 countries world wide. Currently we are receiving music from independent artists from all over the world, such as Canada, Africa, United Kingdom, and Australia to name a few. The biggest thing that sets us apart from the average station is our dedication to our artists. From ground up, we built the station with them in mind and how we could best serve them. Most of where we are today is from teamwork and asking a lot of questions. I’m not the smartest person in regards tp business by any means, but I had a passion and a drive, which is all I needed to get started. From there, I just did a lot of researched and surrounded myself with people who had the answers that I needed. From there I built a stellar team of DJs & personalities and the rest is history. By no means was this journey easy. There were obstacles every step of the way just to get where I’m at now. Looking back, those obstacles made me and my business better. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have learned and been able to grow the station to what it is now. The biggest lesson I learned along this journey as a business owner and entrepreneur is that you can’t do it all by yourself. You have to build a team. It’s very hard trusting people with baby, so to speak. In the end, there are only 24 hours in a day and if you want to get things done efficiently for your business, you have to offload some of that. if not for the business’ sake, then just for your own health and well-being. The take away I want people to know about MizFitz Radio and our story is that we are a station for those artists looking for a platform that’s looking to promote them. Many of the personnel that are apart of the station have been successful in their own rights and now we are looking to give back to the bigger music community as a whole that helped us become successful DJs and business owners.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anyone that knows me, knows if i’m out and about, I’m generally hanging around at Myst Lounge in the Gaslamp District. They by far have the best lamb chops I’ve ever had in my life. It’s an all around great place to just hangout, relax, and blow off some steam after a long day. From the hookahs to the great drinks, the staff there always treat me and my friends like family, so that’s normally my first spot. When trying to get out with my girlfriend, honestly driving Pacific highway always lead to some new adventure. From discovering new eateries or watching the sunset on one of the many beaches, that’s always kinda been the “perfect” date night for us. Just get lost and see what you come up with. San Diego never disappoints.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my mentor, Mr. Ray Thomas of Bronco-iRadio.com student radio station at Fayetteville State University, for giving me the opportunity to start on my road in the radio broadcast industry. My team at MizFitz Radio for believing in my leadership and rocking with me over the past couple of years. It hasn’t been easy, but they saw the vision and invested in it just as much as I have. Last but not least, my girlfriend Danielle Patterson for her love and support. Without her, I may not having my back, this may not have been possible. My bad about the late nights, lol. Last but not least, I’d like to thank all of my friends and family who have always encouraged me to follow my dreams no matter how crazy they may seem to them. Thank you all for the love and support. As Ray would say, “Forward Moving.”
