We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel Moody and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joel, how do you think about risk?
Jumping off the ledge can be hard to do. But I can say from experience that when you do there is a 100% success rate. I would encourage anyone to challenge themselves. We will always be our worst enemies. But if we take that leap it accomplishes many things. It allows you to feel the confidence and thrill of challenging yourself. Whatever effort and energy you put into something you will get back, so taking that leap generally makes you put in more effort thus almost guaranteeing success. Be passionate about what you are doing and just go for it! You will be surprised what you can do!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Revolution in 2010. Dove in with only $10,000, took a leap of faith and opened a small 600sq ft store in Leucadia. I built it out and started working there 7 days a week. My goal was to bring back the family bike shop. I wanted it to be all about helping the people in our community and providing amazing customer service with a smile. Well it snowballed quickly and a year and a half later we moved to our current location in Solana Beach and the business just blew up! Right place, right time, and continuing to help as best we could with everyone whether they rode a tricycle or a $15,000 road bike. We truly wanted to be all things to all people! Now almost 10 years later we have found our niche and dug our feet deep into the community that we love. We have met so many great people and built so many great relationships with people all over the world! The biggest challenge for us has been how the internet and online shopping has changed the way we have to do business. We have had to adapt in many ways to keep up with how people buy in this day and age. With pricing being drastically affected and price matching being something you have to offer, it has been a real challenge to grow at a steady rate. A lot of time, energy, and money has to be expended into our website, marketing, and operation of making sure our brick and mortar and our online offerings are in sync. As more and more people are shopping from the privacy of their homes we have to make sure that we represent and present what we sell in a way that is appealing and also to make sure we respond and react in a timely manner to all the inquiries we receive to give us the best chance to make a sale. Running a business is never smooth. So many ups and downs and figuring out what works is always a challenge. Trying to predict what the market is doing, controlling inventory, and dealing with the growing online side of the business has always been a rocky road. It’s been a learning process but a lot of fun as well! I am most proud of the reputation we have in the community and beyond. We have a solid core of employees that have been with us since the inception and the open airy feel of the shop provides a cool atmosphere, unlike any other bicycle shop. The other thing that sets us apart is our customers are always our #1 priority! We would rather have a customer for life than make a sale one time. This no pressure attitude and way of doing business sets us apart from anyone else!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Solana Beach and the San Diego area has a ton to offer! I would probably start in Coronado Island and do a little biking around the island, stopping to eat and drink along the way. The Henry is a killer brunch spot and then catching the sunset at the Hotel Del is awesome. Then I would make my way to Little Italy and find one of the hundreds of really cool restaurants along the way. Would probably top off dinner at “Starlite” one of our favorite SD places to eat and drink. Making our way up the coast I would definitely chill out in Del Mar, Solana, Cardiff, and Encinitas area. Just way too much to do. You can do it fast or slow! We love where we live and the sights and sounds and the ability to chill with a view or go fast paced and see as much as you can makes it a perfect place to visit!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say my Mom and my wife deserve this dedication. My Mom set the example of what working hard is. She always did everything willingly and always did it with a smile. My wife has that same work ethic, and that all pushes me to be a better person and work hard at being the best I can be!
