We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joel, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My quote is “So smile and be the best you YOU can be!” It’s just like what my mom encourages me to be at every event, whether it’s important or at home. It makes me feel confident in doing the things that I was supposed to do throughout my career, including encouraging kids to be friends to their special needs peers at schools, running my own art store at every other event, and giving speeches.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started drawing on paper and on the computer since I was five years old, and have started painting on canvas when I was eleven. Through looking at art books and pictures of historical people and places, I get inspiration and paint them right onto the canvas. I love to make people smile and that shows up in my art. I do so by using lots of bright colors, highlights, and shadows. Through learning from most of my art mentors, I consider myself a forever student in order to get better at making my masterpieces. I found that shadows, highlights, and blending colors are very difficult, but with the right mentors, patience and lots of practice, anything is possible. I’d like the world to know that each of my artwork has a least of hint of smile somewhere. Maybe they’re meant to bring a smile too. One way I deliver smiles is through my Smile Bags. My Smile Bags are bags filled with art supplies, coloring pages, toys, bibles, etc. The bag features the face of a child with the word “Smile” in 27 different languages. I created them and give them to children all over the world in need of a smile.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d go to Orange County to go sailing at Dana Point through the Tall Sails Festival, or dress up in costumes as anybody from the movies, or have a fun trip to Disneyland or Hollywood. I’d get some ice cream or a grilled cheese sandwich. I’d also really want to meet many celebrities, especially movie stars throughout Los Angeles and Hollywood.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The one person that’s done the most in helping me pursue my art career is my mother, Sandi Anderson. She sees my talent of art and she’s recognized it since I was little. She has always encouraging me to paint and create vivid pieces that I’m passionate about. I’m so appreciative of all the love and support she’s given me throughout the years.
