We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Rey Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer Rey, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It’s pretty funny actually, my vision did not start off as one day I am going to have my own business, it just happened with encouragement from my family. So I did, little by little the word started getting out and the ideas started flowing. I started baking when I was around sixteen years old. I loved making Rice Krispies, cupcakes, and cake pops for family get togethers and parties. Of course, I never charged because it came out of my heart to help their vision come to life. I love baking, decorating, and planning, it just really allows for my creative juices to flow. I have loved the whole process of growing and learning more. The whole process has been awesome from the connections to the friendships that flourished from this.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My creations started off super simple and basic, shoot I did not even know how to make cakes! Thanks to my clients, I got the push I needed and explored into cake baking. Now, it is what I sell the most. I am self taught so I learned new techniques and just started experimenting to expand my skills. Baking is what I do the most, however, I want to be the whole package, and that is what sets me apart from others. I love to decorate, I love to plan, and I like taking charge so deadlines are met and things run as smoothly as possible. My end game goal is to one day have a event venue of my own… A lesson that I have learned along the way is that building friendships and connecting with clients is really key to having a solid base. They are not clients but an extension of you and your creations… Professionally, it was not easy to get where I am today, it took a lot of exploring and learning of my own abilities. The best piece of advice I can give is do not sell yourself short and do not be afraid of a potential client saying they rather go to another vendor. If that is the case, do not freak out it is okay. Your time and effort are priceless and other people will come along that will have no problem seeing the value in your work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have the best of both worlds! I was born and raised in Orange County, however, I recently moved to San Diego. If my best friend came to visit for a week I’d take her out to tour SoCal. For a cute girls brunch I’d take her to Breakfast and Bubbles in San Diego. The food is amazing and the aesthetic, picture worthy I love it. Another great food and drinks spot would be SOL Mexican Cocina in Newport Beach. Next up, I’d try to take her to either an Angel’s or Padres’s game since I enjoy watching baseball. Lastly, for some fun entertainment of course you can never go wrong with Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Seaworld, Legoland, and San Diego Safari Zoo. A jam packed week if you ask me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course! Without a doubt my parents and siblings for giving me a hand when I get so many orders and for always helping me see that my business can be so much more. I know this is a little side tracked, however, this is a huge thanks as well. My business is called Del Diezmo but not many know why. I am very family oriented and they molded me into the person I am today. I grew up going to Mexico constantly and we were four generations under the same roof! A big family for sure but a lot of love and laughs as well. I can not express how grateful I am for the love and compassion they gave me growing up. Here is where I knew it really takes a village to raise a child and I want that village to be known. Del Diezmo is the street in Mexico where my family house is and where my heart grew up. So, in that way I want to honor them and show that my heart is in everything that I do.
