We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenna Kuiken and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
To be honest, it transpired very organically. I had lost about 100 lbs and found a love for REAL FOOD which included juices and smoothies. For almost 10 years I was a makeup artyist and working in retail surrounded by mall junk food, eating healthy was a constant struggle. My coworkers were always asking me to bring in my juices into work for them. One day my manager asked me to make her a juice cleanse and thats really where it took off. Word spread about my cleanses and soon after I was delivering all over town. It started taking up so much of my time that I was really having a hard time balancing my job and my side hustle. I was venting to my mom on the phone one day about not feeling happy with where i was at in my career. As a makeup artist I loved making people feel beautiful but it wasn’t skin deep. The feeling I got after making a difference in peoples health was priceless. She said to me “If you could do anything – what would you do?” Without hesitation I replied “I would just juice.” She said “Okay. So, do that.” … as if it wasn’t complicated. So, I quit my job and put 120% into juicing. I upgraded from my home kitchen to a commercial kitchen, came up with the name “Sacred Juice” with my the help of my mom and made labels. I was official. My mom passed away unexpectedly in her sleep and my entire world was shattered. I knew I had to continue working on my business as she would have wanted. A year after her passing in 2015 I opened my brick and motor location in South Park. We closed in 2016 and I had a beautiful baby girl. I re-opened at the same location in South Park in Sept 2019 and changed my name to Rad Habits Juice. Although the old name will forever be sacred to me, it was time for a new look and a new name. We sell organic, cold-pressed juices, smoothies, Acai bowls, homemade grab and go food, toasts, waffles, functional lattes powered by shrooms, supplements, groceries and so much more! Rad habits start here, we are a one stop wellness wonderland. You don’t have to worry about nutrition facts in my shop, if it’s here you know it’s good for you. I try to stay at the forefront of health trends and also be as transparent as possible with our customers. I think what has contributed to my success is the fact that I keep it real. It’s not as great for profit margins but i’m sticking to what matters. I don’t skimp on ingredients, I only use organic and I don’t HPP my juices. Sticking to the same values as when I first started this from my home kitchen: made with love, in small batches and non fake shit – that’s why it’s so good. Had I sat down and thought about starting this business seriously I would most likely have talked myself out of it but just continuing to do something that I loved evolving into something on its on its own has been a wild ride and I wouldn’t change it. Im learning and growing everyday and I think thats rad.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think I may have answered all of this in my first question. Ive had many hurdles during this journey, especially with COVID but its made me get even more creative as a small business owner. Im excited about the changes ive made in my shop and whats to come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Bar Kindred and Buena Forchetta are always top faves to take friends. By far my favorite food and drinks in San Diego.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, my beautiful mother. My loving husband and my amazing family and friends.
