We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanne Reilly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeanne, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My Co-Founder and I are Registered Dietitians who became parents and quickly realized how underserved new mothers are when it comes to getting the high quality nutrition they need to support postpartum recovery, breastfeeding and overall health. In fact the whole process of becoming parents – from pre-pregnancy planning to fertility support, through pregnancy and the postpartum period – is full of uncertainty, misinformation and confusion for so many. If we were struggling to find the best solutions, even with our professional experience in nutrition, what must the average parents be going through as they tried to navigate the realm of nutrition and supplements to support the health of their family? We decided we could use our knowledge and real-life parenting experience to make things a whole lot easier on moms & dads. Using our personal experience and nutrition expertise we curated the ideal multi-vitamin, mineral & botanical supplement to provide mothers with the high quality nutrition support they desperately need and deserve after pregnancy and birth. Our first product, New Mama, is a postnatal drink mix that helps new mothers thrive in the fourth trimester and beyond. We have plans for a full line of high quality supplements to support moms & dads through the entire process of creating a family.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We came up with the idea for this business together on a playground date with our kids. Every day it feels like the best idea ever – we get to help parents feel better through one of the most challenging phases of their lives! We had ideas for a full line of products tailored to each phase of growing a family (pre-conception, fertility support, pregnancy, and postpartum), but had to choose one to start because we decided this would be a self-funded venture. The area we saw the greatest need was postpartum. Our standards were extremely high – we created a formula for our postnatal supplement based on the most up-to-date research and recommendations for postpartum mothers. We insisted on the highest quality and forms of each nutrient we included. However, our area of expertise is nutrition, not manufacturing, selling and distributing nutritional supplements! It took us almost a year of persistence to find vendors that would meet our standards and be willing to work with us at such a small scale in the beginning. We had to ask family for the money we needed to fund our idea. Everything we had to do to get this up and running was outside of our comfort zone, but by finding and talking to people who had been there, we found our way. We eventually landed with the perfect vendors to bring our vision to life – amazing designers to create our branding and website, product photos, printers for our packaging, manufacturer, lawyers for trademarking, marketing experts, mentors in the startup world, etc. Persistence is everything. We hit so many speed bumps on the way, but here we are over 2 years after that playground playdate getting incredible reviews from mamas who LOVE our product and are truly benefitting from it, telling all their mama friends, and we are growing! Our product is unique in that it’s not another fist full of pills to pop multiple times a day. It’s a delicious tasting drink mix you add to a bottle of water once a day. It is all-in-one – no need for other vitamins and herbal supplements to help with the most common discomforts of postpartum – energy, sleeplessness, hormone/mood shifts, breast feeding, and overall nutrient depletion. It helps new moms stay hydrated when sometimes just drinking enough water is a chore. Our brand is built on trust and understanding. We know first-hand what new parents are going through and the things that can smooth the bumps on the wild ride that is parenthood. We wanted to provide something that they could rely on without question. We also wanted to give them something so easy and enjoyable they could do for themselves to thrive through postpartum. We feel confident we have done just that and cannot wait to do more.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Coronado beach for a sunny day, Mission bay for paddle boarding, La Jolla for strolling around, Hiking, riding bikes, Sunset Cliffs for a sunset, Little Italy for a fun dinner at Ironside or Kettner Rooftop, Balboa park for a weekend picnic with live music, Rad Habits in South Park for an amazing acai bowl or juice, Buona Forchetta for an unforgettable Italian dinner & ambiance.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Running a business as a mom of two kids under 4 would be near impossible without the support and accountability of a business partner. My Co-Founder, Skylar Nelson, and I have a really wonderful working relationship that allows for the flexibility we both need to keep our family time a priority. We are both Registered Dietitians and parents, and we’ve found a division of labor that allows us both to work with our strengths, keeping the work fun and inspiring.
