We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Nicole Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie Nicole, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I knew illustration was the right career choice for me when I realized that I could spend hours and hours each day devoted to sketching new ideas and painting, and I wasn’t getting tired of it. It’s always been my hobby, but over the years it has become my passion! Art school also taught me all of the job opportunities that were possible with drawing and painting, and I decided that illustration was the right direction for my personal career, though it’s certainly not an easy one! The field is full of competition, and like many other creative careers, it takes discipline and determination. It takes a strong sense of purpose as well to keep working through rejection and dry spells. I think it’s important to pursue it with an openness to learn and grow throughout the journey. When opportunities do come along (and they will!), it’s the best feeling to not only work doing what you love most, but to see how happy your work can make someone else. As much joy as it gives me to illustrate something new, it’s equally as rewarding to help someone else’s vision come to life. That’s the main reason I chose to pursue illustration as a career!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Although I work primarily digitally, I always intertwine some sort of traditional medium such as watercolor or paper textures into my illustrations. I tend to gravitate towards bright and dreamy color schemes and whimsical scenes, whether I’m working on a greeting card illustration, a children’s book illustration or a portrait commission. I’m currently working alongside two amazing women on illustrating their upcoming children’s book for kids 8-12, and I’m so excited to share more when it’s published! As far as overcoming challenges and reaching goals, I think it’s so important to stay consistent in creating, even when it is not for a job and it’s just for personal growth or expanding the portfolio. Good things always come out of creating new things regularly.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The last time I had a friend visit, we spent almost every day along the coast in Encinitas. Some of my favorite beaches are in Encinitas and Carlsbad! I think I’d spend a full day checking out all of the local small businesses. Some things that would be on my itinerary would be to see the tidepools at Swami’s, brunch at Honey’s Cafe in Encinitas, ice cream at Handel’s, and beer at Modern Times!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Throughout my journey, my biggest source of support has been my husband and my parents! My husband, Wes Jones, is also an illustrator and graphic designer, and his instagram is @wbillustration . My parents, Jim and Melissa Kazebee, are local real-estate agents in the North County San Diego, and their instagram is @jandmsellhomes .
