We had the good fortune of connecting with James Balmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had a long stay in the hospital back in Dec. 2006. It lasted until May 2007. During that stay my mother would bring me her candied pecans with curry and honey. I loved these pecans and ate pounds of them. After my stay in the hospital, I wanted to do something different for work. I wanted to do my own thing. I came up with an idea! To use my mum’s recipe for her candied pecans and make a snack food business. I thought I’d sell them to my local coffee shops and breweries. I’d call them My Mum’s Nuts. By the way my mother is a witty, smart and humorous elderly British lady. So it seemed fitting. A few breweries carried My Mum’s Nuts. I made several different flavors. Then I soon realized that for a one man operation the profit margin wasn’t there so I started to redo my business plan. So I started to create my own method and process of naturally infusing cannabis into coconut oil. This was when cannabis wasn’t legal just under prop 215 it was available to patients. It was the time of cannabis seshs. Which were like cannabis swap meets. I decided to keep the name My Mum’s Nuts because of the humor behind the name and my friend designed a very cool logo. By the time I had finalized my methods and created products I was vending at all of these cannabis seshs. I won 5 trophies for best edible and topical at these events. When the laws changed making cannabis recreational and no longer under prop 215 I wasn’t able to sell my products. So I changed my business plan once again. I kept the name the same and most of my recipes but decided to move away from cannabis and work with CBD.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In a world full of CBD businesses the factors which set me apart from others are simple. Firstly, I’ve been infusing and making different products for over 5 years now. I make everything from scratch. Consciously, with organic ingredients when possible. I make what I sell. I get my products lab tested to verify the mg’s contained. I use very pure CBD isolates. The hemp plants are lab tested. The CBD isolate is lab tested. My products are lab tested. Being third party lab tested I know all my products have more mg’s then the label states! It can be difficult staying up to date with the laws which are constantly changing. I’m just trying to stick to my guns and keep making healthy, small batch, conscious, lab tested CBD Creations. CBD itself is very healthy but the way it’s delivered to the body may not be healthy. With all the CBD candies, gummies and chocolates on the market these days it can be difficult finding a healthy way to get your CBD. My CBD Creations are very healthy for you. Healthy and versatile. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We live in a lovely city. So many pretty views, hikes and beaches. Coronado is nice to explore. North County has some pretty beaches, as does La Jolla. As for food, we are vegan and San Diego has a plethora of wonderful plant based restaurants. San Diego has so many farmers markets to explore too. Let’s not forget Ocean Beach too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve had a lot of help over the years. Dave Warshaw from Warshaw’s Provisions designed my logo and carries my products at his store in South Park. Monica and Luis have helped me get to all these markets and events. Last but not least is my fiance, Amanda Davila. She helps me so much. Not only getting to markets and carrying things but with new product ideas.
