We had the good fortune of connecting with Hilliard Meeks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hilliard, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Honestly, I always felt that our art is what lives on in our place, here, after we pass. I know It sounds a bit preachy, but I have always been fascinated by the way art out lives us. That’s a beautiful gift that we get to share with our Creator.

I think during the pandemic, we all saw how valuable creatives and art were to ease tough times. I don’t know if we will have to incur such times again, but I do want to help bring entertainment and comfort to anyone and everyone no matter the season of life that they are in.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an actor and a screenwriter, I don’t feel that I have a common look nor perspective on life, which I use to my advantage. In acting I carry a lot of my own experiences into my performances. This makes every trial that I have had to endure, no matter if it was a self inflicted, or one of happenstance, a blessing that I try to bring into each character that I get to play. As a writer, this is great because I get to develop stories from an uncommon place, that I hope viewers relatable in different ways.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question. I would probably start off in with brunch either in Little Italy or Coronado. Probably Morning Glory which is out towards Little Italy, and maybe do another breakfast/ Brunch at Crown Bistro. To tell you the truth San Diego county has an incredible breadth of breakfast and brunch spots all throughout. So, it all depends on what part we are in. Definitely love having drinks in some of the local pubs in Gaslamp like Patrick’s. Love walking through La Jolla cove. Stop into some of the art galleries like the Carlton or Hallmark galleries. Take time at Mopa in Balboa Park. In fact, checkout any of the museums in Balboa, and walk the Japanese Friendship Gardens. The San Diego Zoo and the Safari park is a must see, and you can’t leave out the best places to grab tacos like Tacos El Gordo, Tacos Asadero, or Birria El Rey.

No San Diego trip is complete without hangout in Mission Beach and Del Mar. to tell you the truth, San Diego has way too much to get lost, and have an adventure in. That’s probably why it’s the most expensive city to live in. Oh, can’t leave out watching baseball games at Petco Park, or watching soccer in Snapdragon.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I got to give a Shoutout to my wife Amber. My daughters, Yesenia and Yelaina. My best friends Saint Thompson, and Michael Joseph Pierce for always pushing me forward in my pursuits.
