We had the good fortune of connecting with Hilary Bateman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hilary, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
To be flexible and adapt to change…… starting and owning a small business is quite a roller coaster ride! It changes constantly……. one day might be a slow relaxing day spent designing a few floral arrangements surrounded by beautiful flowers and the next day might be crazy, busy with lots of customers, phone calls, and not a chance to stop and smell the roses. Change happens within your business and outside as we have certainly experienced this year! Change has a huge impact on how we do business. It is so important to truly understand that change is inevitable and should be anticipated. I embrace it and learn to shift gears; it is vital to keep my business running smoothly. I am not afraid to change my path to accommodate the change. If something isn’t working, I tweak it; try something different…. adapt and make my way. I can’t let my fear of change be stronger than my business. After all, the world needs more beauty, fearless beauty; the world needs more flowers and Little House of Flowers is just the place to make sure that happens here in San Diego.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Little House of Flowers is a local boutique flower shop that specializes in fresh flowers and succulent for your home, business, or special event. Our customers can pre-order bouquets, floral and succulent arrangements, for pick-up or delivery from our website LIttleHouseOfFlowersSD.com. We deliver locally and nationwide! If you’re in a hurry you can stop by and grab a quick pre-made bouquet. Little House of Flowers also creates custom arrangements for special events, dinner parties, weddings, anniversaries, funerals, and corporate events. Wreaths, poinsettias, centerpieces, and festive succulent and floral arrangements are available for the holidays as well. Little House of Flowers is proud of being little ☺. We are all about the little details, personal, friendly service, and making sure our customers are completely satisfied and ready to come back for more fresh flowers.

We will be have a Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 19^th 12-5pm including a visit from Santa Claus  We have an event page on Facebook.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is absolutely no other place like beautiful San Diego! As a native San Diegan, some may say I am a bit biased, but I honestly don’t think so! Just take a look around at this amazing city that we are so lucky to call home. The opportunities and experiences in San Diego are endless. Beaches, mountains, deserts; take your pick, a night out on the town or a quiet stroll along the coast? We have it all right here! Some of my don’t miss places in San Diego – • La Jolla Cove for an early morning stroll • A walk along Sunset Cliffs anytime with a coffee & scone from Azucar • Hotel Del Coronado to experience the history and beauty of Coronado including the Coronado Bridge • The Bali Hai for a killer Mai Tai • Julian for a hike and a slice of apple pie

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The encouragement and support of our neighborhood and the community has been such a huge part of the success of Little House of Flowers. Like most entrepreneurs, I honestly have experienced moments of doubt, fear, and plain exhaustion since opening Little House of Flowers. In those moments, the kind words and reassurances from others are what get me through. It puts me back in the game with a new outlook and renewed energy. It is not uncommon for a neighbor, a fellow small business owner, or a customer to stop by just to check in on us. They are truly rooting for us during this challenging time. They promote our shop to others and refer us to their family and friends which is the biggest compliment and helps our business grow. I also need to recognize Auburn Torres, our amazingly talented floral designer. This shop is as much hers as it is mine. She has been with Little House of Flowers since day one! We just celebrated two years of being in business. Not only does she turn everything at LittleHouseof Flowers into pure beauty but she has taught me so much about caring for our flowers and floral design. There is no one else I would rather have by my side ….we make a perfect team!
