We had the good fortune of connecting with Hector Diaz-Ceballos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hector, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Nine years ago I was in the final stages of my professional golfing career. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit coming from seeing my grandfather and father run different businesses. I’ve always loved business and providing solutions to the market. At that time I had the opportunity of buying Hair Drezzers on Fire and I decided to go for it. I felt that my background with working in businesses growing up, learning from my family and my degree in advertising (minor in business) were a good combination of things that could help me run a successful business. I didn’t have any experience in the beauty industry but fell in love with the artistic side of it and how complimenting it with solid business fundamentals could create something really special! I’ve had the pleasure of working with over 100 stylists, have owned 5 salons (currently 3) and in 2020 in the middle of a shutdown me and my partner Jina Javier decided to start Theorie Consulting. We made the decision after many inquiries from fellow business owner reaching out to us to ask us who helped us with different areas of our businesses. We were doing most of the things in-house and we thought we could provide those services at reasonable prices for small business owners.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own or co-own 3 salons in San Diego, CA. Hair Drezzers on Fire, Raven and Sage, Leo by Liv3 and a consulting agency called Theorie Consulting. I am passionate about people and creating businesses in which everyone involved has the ability to grow and reach their full potential. I like empowering employees to make decisions and to bring their strengths to create a successful team. I tend to be more big picture and feel comfortable talking risks. I don’t tend to overthink and I believe you will always learn more by doing than by thinking about it or planning for too long. I’m big on believing in the process and being patient for results. My way of running a business is by executing, evaluating, adjusting what needs to be improved on and executing again. I would like to be known for always respecting everyone and being empathetic.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I like to customize things haha. If my best friend liked golf, I would probably take him to a few of my favorite golf courses in town. If golf wasn’t his/her thing I would try to take him/her somewhere they would enjoy based on their personality. As far as eating and drinking, I would probably do most of that in my house because I love to cook and entertain. Might take them out to one my favorite sushi spots (Himitsu or Ken’s Sushi Workshop).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Every stylist that believed in me and trusted me when I came into the beauty industry. Without them it would have never been possible to be where I am today!
